It depends on the State. Some states have closed primaries where only those registered as party members can vote in the primary. Some have open ones when anyone legally able to vote can vote in the primary. In PA where Pat and I reside, you have closed primaries.

It's NP James.
The primaries are for deciding party candidates only. If you're a Dem you have to vote for the Dem candidates, same for Reps. Or the Green Party or legalize Marijuana party and etc. If you're Independent you may not get to at all, some states let you. Though it all varies. In the actual election, you can vote for anyone. I can write in Aaron Turner from Isis if I want. As a registered Democrat, I would have to switch to Republican to vote in that primary...but that's an easy thing to do. Thanks.
Is there an option to spoil your paper, like we have over here? If we don't find a candidate we like, we usually spoil our paper. At least then we're still coming out to vote. That seems like a terribly unfair system by the way. A bit elitist in those closed primaries especially. All States should have the same system, in my opinion. |

States are meant to be heterogeneous. The purpose of the country is to have independent states and a weak federal government binding them. I don't quite like the idea of a closed primary, but I do somewhat understand it. I wish PA did not have one. You can easily switch your affiliation though. I had many people I know switch to republican to vote for Ron Paul.
I'm not sure what you mean by spoil your paper. If you mean something that shows you came to vote, but you do not cast it for any candidate, then we do not have that. You can always write in a candidate as a spoiler. People often write in Mickey Mouse for this purpose. Since the ballots are secret though, I do not so much see the point though. |

Well things are rarely uniform here lol almost always varies by state.
I do think that idea has been floated around in election reform, having all open primaries. I wouldn't mind honestly. Though I guess in theory it could lead to an election with this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_McMillan against http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermin_Supreme Sounds like something a book should be about, everyone trying to ruin the other party and we get 2 joke candidates! edit: yeah as Pat said, in reality it's not a big deal to do. Which I will probably do, then either go back or to Independent. Edited by JJLehto - January 05 2012 at 18:58 |

Are you trying to provide an example of a straw man argument? |

If I switched from Labour to Conservative, my parents would disown me.
![]() I hate the right-wing I realise Ron Paul is not your usual Republican but you're falling yourself if you think he's the saviour of The United States of America. So I'd just not bother switching, Brian and just not bother voting. |

Well it'd be solely for this, I'm an independent and will be that later :D Well before all this I was thinking of going Independent but f**k it...laziness
![]() Yeah he's not really a Republican in my mind and the savior? Maybe not but gotta go for what's best. I'm sick of settling for the "lesser evil" (yeah I know) and I just can't not vote. Stubborn I know. Edited by JJLehto - January 05 2012 at 19:09 |

I question how much you even know about him. I think you're fooling yourself if you think there's a better candidate or if you think what any other candidate says will actually be true when they get elected. |

Here's how much Republicans hate Paul - listened to Medved today, he was asked who'd he vote for in an Obama-Paul election. He said he'd just stay home.

I don't think any of them are suitable. Why would I vote for Ron Paul? Seriously?
There isn't a left in America. The Democrats are barely more left than the Republicans and they're not even really that left. So I guess I'd be a Mickey Mouse voter. |
