How long should I wait after an old topic is posted to start a similar thread?  Don't get me wrong; I don't want to start making threads that have been tried a million times in the past, but sometimes I think a topic deserves another discussion, especially as we have new people with new opinions joining the site all the time.  Should I wait until the previous thread is locked, or is there a guideline as to how many days the topic should have been inactive before I start a similar one?

I'm asking this because I was thinking about starting Foxtrot vs. SEBtP poll (which has only been done twice in the history of the site, surprisingly, to my knowledge.  I could be wrong; my search skills are nowhere near perfect), and also because I recently had a thread closed so that a preexisting thread that had been dead for almost a year could be used.  I'm fine with that, but when I posted on the old thread I got complaints about my reopening it!  I'm not complaining about anyone's opinions, I just wondered if there was a PA policy about this so that I could adjust my posting habits in the future.

If the topic already exists use that topic.  If the topic has been locked send an email to an Admin and politely request that they unlock it and most likely they will, unless it was locked because of it being too contentious of a topic.  And if it was Henry who complained about you posting in an old topic, ignore him, because he complains about everything. Also, I suspect that that particular poll has probably been done more than twice. LOL  Maybe it has only been twice in the last month.

You raise a good point.  Sometimes the older (in terms of when they joined) members here crank about discussions we've seen a million times being raised again by resurrecting a "dead" topic or poll; but were someone to start a new thread the inevitable "Use the search function!!" squawking begins.  We can't have it both ways.

For the most part it's best that you start by searching a particular topic; what we don't want is a new thread when an existing one is fairly new, say a few weeks or months old.  If you find a thread on something that's years old, you could consider posting in it, or start a new thread, but be sure an explain your reasons for doing so - in particular, something to the effect of "I know this topic has been discussed before, but I'd like to re-engage the conversation in a new thread rather than resurrecting past discussion, for <insert reason>".

Sorry if anyone's annoyed you, hope you continue to enjoy the site.

There is no PA policy on this. There's no right or wrong answer. The members will soon let you know if they think the topic is well worn already.
 
If it seems likely the topic has already been discussed, a quick search should find old threads. Remember to change the default of "Last 6 months" to "Any date".

The only repeated or revived thread I've moaned about is the death growl one, and I'll do it every time someone repeats or revives it because of the 100s of subjects I've ever been involved in discussing on this forum it is the only one that never goes anywhere - seriously - read the first few posts on the first page of any thread on that subject and you will have read every opinion there is ever likely to be on it.
 
Polls that pitch one album against another or one band against another don't interest me so don't mind how many there are or how often they are repeated, I've never regarded Prog as a competitive sport.

I'm not mad about you complaining about the growl topic; I respect your opinion (I'm just happy you didn't lock the thread!)Wink.  I just had some musical ideas about the subject that I thought deserved discussion.  Really, the reason I posted about the subject is that I realized the topic never got anywhere and I wasn't aware of a thread specifically devoted to the subject, so I thought that a focused discussion might yield some interesting ideas on the topic.  Unfortunately though, although some people had some interesting points (I'm not just talking about my own posts, I saw others that actually added to the discussion), no one seems to want to respond to them, so the discussion never gets very far.  Again, I'm not attacking you personally, it's just that the general tendency of the forum hasn't been kind to the discussion so far.  I still like the thread, though, because you can find interesting stuff in there if you're willing to look for it.

You know I try not to be too judgemental about what is prog and what is not but growl vocals aren't prog.  Autotuned vocals aren't prog.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Someone in the growl thread suggested that bands autotune the growls.  That actually might be interesting...like a cross between T-Pain and Mikael AkerfeldtLOL
