Two different calculations:

  342
 -173
=169

  342
 -173
=147

So which one do you prefer?

You don't have to be great at maths to know the answer.

I’m not Greek, and as far as I know the Norwegian economy is quite strong.

Have a look at this:

You know it was a metaphor meaning to say I was rubbish at maths and I actually do need explaining to get it. Wink

I'll let you guys have a bit more fun then I'll be waiting to be enlightened. :P I suppose it's all about "reading" it not like a subtraction but something else (which would explain the possibly eccentric position of the minus), but I don't know any other way to read it.

Thanks! That was my goal with the poll!

Actually, I was inspired by all the Genesis/Yes/Rush polls we’ve seen recently, and even more by the Suggestions thread in Just For Fun.

@Alex: It’s a song by Tom Lehrer. It’s called New Math, and I posted a link to the lyrics in my last post.

It's addition/subtraction in base 8, which means the only "numbers" you have available to you are 0 through 7.

So in base 8, 7+1=0, 7+2=1, 7+3=2, etc.

You can google modulo arithmetic to learn more.

OK, I was just basing my comment on your location.  I probably have read before that you weren't from Greece, but just forgot.

No problem.  Actually, I need to amend my example- it's 7+1=10, 7+2=11, etc.  Once it "overflows" you get another digit, just as in base 10, 7+3=10.
