Topic: Yet Another Recommend Me Some Music Thread Posted: December 16 2011 at 17:30 |
Hey fellow proggers. I was just wondering if you guys'd be kind enough to recommend me some good prog to listen to. I've tried some of the bigger neo proggers like Marrillion, TFK, and SB, but none of them have really stuck much. Some of my fav prog bands are: -Genesis -The Tangent -Jethro Tull -Introitus -Manning -Strawbs -The Decemberists (One of my fav bands. Forgot to mention 'em in my first post.) -Horslips -Ritual
And my feelings about some genres are so: -Favorite genres: Symphonic, Eclectic, Crossover. -Neutral or iffy genres: Folk (I like it, but it can tend to be a bit boring), Canterbury (Same), Space (Same again) Neo (on an artist-by-artist basis), Heavy (As long as it's varied and not too abrasive). -Disliked Genres: Metal, Tech, Avant, Math -Genres I don't have much exposure to: RPI, Raga, Zeuhl, Fusion, Kraut, Electronic.
One last important note is that I prefer catchiness to complexity, although both are obviously best. So, does anyone have anything they'd recommend to me? Thanks. :)

Can I just mention that SB and TFK are not Neo Prog? But you don't like them so it doesn't matter anyway.

Oh yeah, sorry. I was writing quickly so I qualified them as neo because they're new. I meant symph, of course.

I don't care if they're not actually in neo-prog here, as far as I'm concerned they are. By the way, oddly enough those are two I have tried and don't dislike, but they just didn't click. By the way, no exposure to PRI. I don't know the genre well but I have a lot of PFM. If you have an aversion to non-English lyrics, warm up with Cook, The World Became The World, of Photos Of Ghosts. Also Live In Japan would be good.

Nothing to do with "here". As far as I'm concerned they are not.

I don't know if you'd ever want to expose yourself to prog electronic, but if you do then I'd like to suggest:
or
The genre's a bit tedious to get into at first but it can be quite addicting, and the above albums were my first exposure and I believe they are a good combination of accessible and representative of the genre. Enjoy!

AntiDepressive Delivery - The Best Of.. > Heavy Prog Caravan - If I Could Do it all Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You > Canterbury Beardfish - Destined Solitaire > Eclectic Prog Diagonal - Diagonal > Eclectic Prog Anekdoten - From Within > Heavy Prog Big Big Train - The Underfall Yard > Crossover

Then I can't really argue the point because I am not particularly concerned about it. I wasn't using "here" as a snide remark, but perhaps I was, but disregarding the definitions and just going on the words for the various subs, I put them over there.
