Direct Link To This Post Topic: Question about Rush's Sectors
    Posted: November 26 2011 at 00:19
I wasn't sure where to put this, so feel free to chastise me for the wrong locale, but anywho, has anyone else noticed a problem with Rush's Sectors DVD-As?  I have all three box sets and have attempted to play Fly By Night, AFTK and Signals, but none of them will play in DVD-A mode.  When my DVD player is set to DVD-A as the default, the menu for the album will appear on my screen, but when I try to play the album, it brings up the first track and then sits at 0:00.  Then the player seems to freeze up.  When I switch the DVD player to DVD-V mode, the albums will play.  Just found this very odd.

It isn't my player as earlier this evening I was playing the DVD-A of Starless and Bible Black in DVD-A mode just fine.

Confused
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

I have not come across having to choose a DVD mode during playback.

Presumably DVD-A is DVD audio only? Do you need to have a special type of DVD player to play DVD-audio, or will it play on a standard DVD player?

I have a DVD-A player, and you need to have one to play DVD-As.  I've never come across that either where I had to choose the mode.  I've always had it set to DVD-A.  I think the mode only matters if you insert a disc that is both a DVD-A  and a DVD-V.  Because I can play DVD-Vs in DVD-A mode.  But for some strange reason, the Rush DVDs will not play in that mode.

Aparently Rush have acknowledged a problem with the Fly By Night audio on the Sector 1 box and the 5.1 DVD A Farewell To Kings disc on Sector 2.

Seems they are going to replace all faulty discs when new ones have been manufatured but haven't yet made it clear how to go about this. They must be furious as I'm sure many fans like myself have postponed buying them until this problem is resolved.

I'll be interested to hear of anyone who has these discs without faults and also when faultless sets are available. I'm guessing it'll be in the new year now.

Cheers.  My copy of Signals also has the same problem.  All three of them are the same.  I'll have to keep an eye out on how to get replacements once they've fixed the problem.

Hey Doc, quick question: despite the problem with the DVD-As, how happy are you with the boxsets?

I'm asking because I'm a Rush fan who, shamefully, hasn't a single album by them, even though I've paid more than normal to see them live and get a couple od DVDs - so it's not that I don't want to pay for Rush albums, it's just that I'd been waiting for something like this boxset. I was expecting a lot of their albums would get the recent Moving Pictures treatment, but judging by the timing in the launch of this boxset, it might not be so. Still, on paper this looks near-perfect: 15 remastered albums packed in mini-lp format for about 7 euros/cd (I'm gessing the only thing better would be getting HQ vinyl, but that would surely push up the price).

Bigger on the inside.

Its a pretty amazing package for sure. A friend of mine back east bought them and he loves it! As huge a Rush fan as I am I don't think I will get them.....I'm a traditional vinyl lover at heart and since I have all the CD's not really looking for more and I don't do 5.1 DVD stuff as to hard to listen to as that system would disrupt the entire household upstairs.
I am looking forward to re-releases of Rush CD only material one day on vinyl, it was nice to get the Moving Pictures Live vinyl last month...I for one hope it will continue.
Remastered Vapor Trails on vinyl would be awesome!!

Aside from the problem with the DVD-As, I'm very happy with the three boxsets.  Very good remastering job and the music of course speaks for itself.  And of course I love mini-LP sleeves.  The gatefold ones especially.  If you've been waiting for a reason to jump into Rush's albums, I can't think of a better time than now.  No bonus material, but from what I've heard, there was no bonus material for them to release.  And the 5.1 surround still sounds fantastic.  I just have to manually switch my DVD player's default mode to DVD-V to listen to it.  And then switch it back when I'm done.  Really it's nothing but a bit inconvenient.

I would love to get the box sets but already have the albums on CD so see no point in getting them - Wish I had waited though now

Anyone got any of these boxsets without faulty 5.1 mix discs yet?
