Hi
I still doesn't see why Buckethead isn't in the Prog related tred, have the guys in charge of it listened to his albums? Really? So which one? I mean this has done so many things BTW, I can't help thinking that there is some paradox on that tred, like with Metallica: I love that band but it's only very slightly progressive (call of chtlu, and justice for all album, orion, some other stuffs) compared to them even Megadeth is much more progressive and is clearly an influence for the later to come bands in the progrssive/tech metal bands, well prooves? Time signatures, complex structures and use of other stuff than the pentatonic (hangar 18 for exemple) well I won't class them as prog related though For exemple I think Buckethead is much more progressive than Satriani, or Vai, or even Bumblefoot on certain albums, seriously he has unique style, it might not be consistent in most albums, but it(s not the point. |

Seriously, guys: it's not time to a Prog Team evaluate Buckethead?

I remember that we were talking about him in Eclectic a bit at one time (Moris of the Eclectic team knows him but is not currently with the site, and I think another team member knows them and wanted it in but he hasn't been really involved with the team), and of course it's been suggested that it might be better suited to prog Related, but he has a KFC bucketful of album, and I think someone who is really keen on the addition should prepare a really good proposal and provide sufficient musical samples to a team (from various albums), and coordinate with them. I don't know if anyone has put a let of leg work into this to help a team out with the evaluation.
And I don't know if this ever was formally put to Prog Related. Edited by Logan - October 20 2011 at 14:54 |

Yea, his discography is a problem. I would say some should be in prog-related, but some should go under prog-metal, eclectic prog, avant-prog, even jazz-rock/fusion.

Which can make him acceptable for the Eclectic category (eclectic over his discography). |

While this makes sense, I meant that he has whole albums that are prog metal, some completely jazz-fusion, etc... it's not like the styles are all over the place on each album (though this applies too), but that some albums are more focused. You know what I mean? |

Like Porcupine Tree, he has varying styles from album to album.
So does that mean he should be filed under the most common genre he puts out? Eclectic or Prog-Related makes sense to me though. Seeing both don't stamp a definitive genre on the artist.

we should make a new sub-genere called Buckedhead-Tom-Waits-related-crossover-eclectic-prog-something-something-vaudeville-metal-with-jazz-and-stuff.

I know what you mean, but I mean that he could be considerable for being eclectic not for individual Eclectic appropriate albums, but for albums covering various prog category styles over his full discography -- as long as the majority of his albums don't favour one particular prog-style. I' know that's a really clunky way that I said it. So, for instance, to make a really simplistic example, if an artist released one (quite pure) symph prog album, one JRF album, one progressive electronic album, it could still be suitable for the Eclectic category -- not for a particular album, but over the discography. |

Gotcha. The Eclectic would be most suitable. |

I have 10 of his albums, and a friend of mine who is a huge Buckethead fan has almost 3 times as much, so Ive heard a good amount of his material. Some of it is just noise and dissonance with fast shred guitar; those are the albums I don't intend to get myself. His discography is all over the place

Well, this means someone will call the Ecletic Team to evaluate?

I'm familiar with about 10 of his albums, but that's hardly the majority of the 106 albums he has released with various collaborations. He covers almost every rock genre at some point, so I think that either eclectic or prog-related would be fitting.
Heres a start: Decoding the Tomb of the Bansheebot: progressive metal Electric Tears: acoustic, ambient Crime Slunk Scene: funk metal Inbred Mountain: experimental, progressive rock Population Override: jazz fusion Island of Lost Minds: experimental, avant-garde Acoustic Shards: acoustic Bucketheadland 2: experimental, noise Enter the Chicken: progressive metal Thanatopsis: jazz fusion Edited by Eärendil - October 20 2011 at 22:46 |

And I've heard his In Search of the... box set. It's pretty much a vast mixture of all of the previously mentioned.
Add him yet? |

Wait, he was seriously never actually evaluated? PF only has Hughes voting for him for PM, but that of course does not mean much.
And I was about to complain that this is a dead horse...

Based on what everyone is saying, Buckethead probably belongs in Eclectic. We have Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie's Brains on queue for move from PR to Eclectic, but I'm the only one who has voted yes (because I suggested it).
The trouble is Buckethead's prolific nature. We'll get to him eventually and somehow. It's just daunting and we're still working our way out of a backlog. |

It is probably better to add 20 "smaller" artists than one big - Buckethead. You'll get to it eventually, the important thing is that the work progresses. |

The only thing I can add here is that he was rejected for Prog Metal more then 3 years ago. At least one of the Yes votes dates after the conclusion but even so the decision must have been obvious
