Osama Bin Laden is dead. So let's remember those he cold blooded murdered.

What is your personal memories from 11. September 2001 ?

I was working for a multi national company just off Sandy Row in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The scene of some terrible atrocities against the mankind during the last 30 years. A place where we just had one bomb scare. I also had reasons, later confirmed, to believe that one of my work mates was a Provisional IRA member and another one was involved in UDA (not confirmed). Both of them designated terrorist organisations, btw. But those two worked fine along each other and there was no problems whatsoever. I have a deep admiration and love for the people in Northern Ireland based on my work with them.

I was alerted by a friend who accidently put on CNN and spotted the first plane hit the towers. I knew about that B 17 hitting Empire State Building during World War 2 in heavy fog and I thought it was a sightseeing plane hitting the tower, and falling down to the ground without damaging anyone inside the tower. Sad for the deceased, but relative harmless in a town full of sightseeing planes.

I was off course wrong and the next hours..........

I walked home that night not so sure if 12. September would come. Frankly; I thought it was the end of the world. I was scared. Very scared. I made my peace with God that night. It was the peace a doomed man waiting for his excecution at the gallows pole makes with his maker.

I have a sincere wish noone of the coming generations will ever experience 9/11. That day was hideous beyond comprehension. This day were ten to hundred times worse for you guys in USA and in New York though.

Never again. Never again !!

Lived in the DC suburbs then.

I was driving to work listening to the radio when they interrupted the broadcast to announce a plane had hit one of the WTC towers - wasn't sure what to make of it until they announced that a second plane had hit the other tower, then I knew exactly what was happening.  I was driving over the Woodrow Wilson bridge at the southern end of Washington, DC, when I looked up the river and saw a huge black plume of smoke - perhaps 5 minutes prior the Pentagon was hit.

I was basically feeling sick to my stomach for the rest of the day, and maybe the rest of the week too.  Changed my entire outlook on the world.

I was in Photography class in High School.  I remember calling my father from a pay phone down the hall because I knew he was supposed to have flown to DC that day.  Luckily it was an afternoon flight and had been cancelled.  Some kids went home early that day, because they could and their parents were freaked out (yeah, Greensburg, PA was going to be the next target that day), but most of us just went from class to class watching on tv.

As tragic as that day was the government, or course, found way after way to extend the suffering to everyone while growing their centralized power and raping our inalienable rights.  Americans lost far more than brothers, sisters, parents, neighbors that day: we lost our minds.

It was a nice morning.  I was driving into work.  I never listen to the radio so I was clueless as to what was happening.  Running a little late and got some cash out of the ATM.  Really spooky was that I was listening to this:Sound-Dust

I came in to the office which was in a converted house.  On a small TV I saw plane 2 crash in to tower 2 live.  I tried to go back to work on my computer but I went back to the TV.  When number one came down I knew it had.  One of my bosses was looking at it at the same time and didn't believe what he had just witnessed (we were an architectural firm).  A wall-covering rep came by not too long after.  My wife had to evacuate the building she was working in downtown Atlanta.  She came up to the office via MARTA (our area local transit system).  We all went out for Mexican lunch together including the firm's vice president of the firm who was married to the president.  My wife's from New York and the first place I wanted to visit when we went up there toghether in 1999 was one of the towers.  (The second big building was The Empire State Building in 2000).  The towers weren't well regarded amongst architects.  But they were an amazing act of engineering.  And man, the view from the top was amazing.  Wish I had the chance to go to the Windows On The World restaurant.  Horrible loss of life.

If he was behind it all and is finally dead, good riddance.

I was in 7th grade in 2001, and all I did was get on the bus and go to school after watching the towers collapse on TV.  So it was basically like any other regular day, except everyone at school was talking about it; one guy on my bus route thought we should nuke Afghanistan.  That was a horrible year in general.  A friend of mine was hit by a car that same year.

For me: It was a normal school day, and I was in the 6th grade doing my math homework in class (because I was a d*** who never did my math homework). I remember my teacher getting a phone call, being flabbergasted, running out of the room, and rushing back in with a small television. He plugged it in, turned to the news channel, and told all of us to cease our work and that we wouldn't be doing any work for the rest of the day. So, we focused on what was happening on the television. I remember a lot of kids crying, and the girl that sat next to me was crying and latched onto me for support, which I was of course completely fine with. I personally didn't feel much emotion, although I did acknowledge that the event was tragic and a sign of definite distress and sadness within America. I remember the rest of the day just being kind of gloomy and depressing for most people, and nobody really talked at all.

I have very vivid memories of 9/11, since Jean and I married three days later. The marriage had been planned long ago, and Jean's relatives from the USA had already arrived a few days before the wedding (and had to stay quite a while because airplanes did not fly for quite a long time after 9/11). The people talked of nothing else on the day of our wedding, which is of course not what we had hoped for.
I have mixed feelings about the death of Bin Laden. Whatever a person has done, you can't just go and kill him or her. Why not try to capture him and put him before a trial?
The burning of his body and especially the distribution of the ashes over the sea raises some other questions too: Why was his body not identified by an international and neutral committee? Did they really kill Bin  Laden? There are many conspiracy theories out there about 9/11, and the whole event is very fishy indeed if you ask me. Some people will claim he never was killed, only some fall guy, and that Bin Laden is still alive somewhere because the whole 9/11 scenario was cooked up between the pentagon and Bin Laden. Just  go to one of the 9/11 conspiracy sites; I am certain you will find a lot of speculation like that there now.

I was still in Ecuador. I had no class that day in my university so I was sleeping when my dad awoke me with the rather Bushian message "hey son turn on the tv WWIII has started" (he's always a little dramatic ". I turned on the tv while still on bed and watched, totally glued to the tv for the next hours. That afternoon we had a jamming session planned with my bassist and a friend of his I didn't know. When I got there, this idiotic guy (a leftist, like the ones we have in SouthAmerica which means just short of maoist) said "oh you know the towers were just background for their tv shows". I obviously reacted to such a stupid remark saying that lives had been lost. This idiotic keyboard player/revolutionary said "oh, everybody looks after their interests; they invade countries and kill people and don't get sad; now it's our turn". No need to say we never jammed with that idiot again.

I was at work. Someone got a phone call from their father asking if we had Sky News. We turned on before the second jet hit. Never forget that day...

I was home watching TV as my soon-to-be-wife and I were switching off working and taking care of our young daughter. So Dora or some kid show (before we got rid of our TV) was interrupted with the first hit and so I was watching as the second hit and then all the confusion about DC. I actually drove to my wife's workplace clinic and everyone just sat in the lounge watching events unfold - including both towers collapsing. No patients were showing up. I remember the increased military planes, remember watching Bush address congress and remember when we began the war in Afghanistan.

My grandmother died exactly one month to the day after that, and I was married 6 weeks to the day after. Emotionally chaotic fall. I am genuinely smiling but gaunt in my wedding photos.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

According to statements by the Pentagon, he was not cremated.  And they matched his DNA profile with that of his relatives to be sure that it was actually Bin Laden that they were killing, and not a look-alike.

I also agree that there were a lot of suspicious circumstances surrounding 9/11 and our reaction to it by invading Iraq, but without solid evidence in place of mere speculation, there is no reason to declare that it was solely a conspiracy perpetrated by the U.S. federal government.  However, I would like to see more evidence released to the public on this issue, especially photographic proof of Bin Laden's capture and assassination.

According to the news I heard on the radio he was cremated.. And  WDR 3 is a very reliable station.

I was in Grade 11, and found out about the tragedy in my second period class (Law).  I think the teacher may have been late to class, and nobody was sure why.  Before she showed up, we were just goofing off like typical 16 year olds.

She came into the class appearing understandably shaken, and he informed us the best she could what had taken place.  We didn't have a television, but I 'm certain we listened to the radio to piece together what had happened.  I don't think we did any work that period.  All I remember is discussing what could have possibly happened and what the consequences would be.

I don't recall seeing the actual footage of the crash and the towers falling until months after it was released.  I couldn't bring myself to watch it.  The first time I recall seeing it was Fahrenheit 911.  I must have seen it before then, but it was all the more shocking to see it on a large screen.

Muslim culture forbids cremation, and according to every press release I have read, the U.S. government has stated that they acted in accordance with this tradition.

My mother came to my room to ask me to come in the livingroom to see what's happening on TV. I was listening music with my headphones and I gave her a despising look - how dare she think I would interrupt listening to music for something that's on TV? I didn't find out what's happening until half a day later. A true arrogant proggie Approve

I haven't read down the thread but I saw the thing live on CNN. I got on the phone with a flying buddy and told him just to turn on CNN. I was ata loss for words. Being pilots we couldn't believe it and we were watching it together and commenting about it on the phone. When the second one came in we thought it was going to miss. These guys who did this had more than basic flight instruction as private pilots. They had experience with large aircraft. They had to have situational awareness in order to precisely navigate the aircraft and then aim them into their targets.

My memory of that day I guess was disbelief and it took me a while to convince myself that I wasn't watching a movie.. My friend who is an airline pilot who was due to fly that evening flight was cancelled and there was a no fly order if anyone was caught flying an airplane over Montréal that evening would have been shot down. I remember seeing a few CF-18s patrolling.

It was a very spooky day for me.

8th grade English class.

Everything was business as usual when our principal got on the loudspeaker and said "An explosion has happened at the World Trade Centers, anyone with family who works there please report to the office". We were a little shocked and worried. This was already a while into the tragedy.

Then our teacher pulled out a radio and turned it on. I remember hearing chaos. Utter and total chaos. Every person there was sitting in silent horror listening to it all. Amongst all the madness a voice yelled out "The second tower has just collapsed! The second tower has just collapsed! Both towers are now down"

I still remember my feeling at that moment, and it was the worst I've ever felt.
On another level, I was born and raised 13 years (at the time) in the shadow of NYC. The skyline and WTC are visible from my town and didn't phase us. Just part of the scenery. My whole family has always felt a link with the city like a backyard...

So I remember having the most surreal feeling ever leaving school, to see smoke hovering over town and a giant black column of smoke where the towers were. Adding to the surrealism was the fact it was one of the most perfect feeling days ever...beautiful out. It was all beyond weird.

For a while, I had to look at the gap in the skyline and see the result of a man's hate, a giant hole where thousand of innocent people were murdered. Someone in my science class lost both his parents that day...
As a just barely 13 year old it all struck me hard.

And yes Slarti, the view from the top was great. I found a picture I took from on the roof when I was quite young and have made sure to never lose it.

I watched the whole thing on CNN. It came on suddenly during the football show. There was one smoking tower on the screen and I was confused as the commentatary stated they had no idea how the fire started.

Then as i watched a few minutes later a plane was seen crashing in the second tower - those images will never be erased.

It was like a hollywood movie but it was real. i was in shock. I had to work at YMCA at a childrens holiday program that day. Every parent who dropped their child off that day had a stunned look and wanted to talk about it to me.

I remember walking the streets that day to buy a paper and the world felt different. People loked different, even worried, and I did not feel safe - and I was in Australia!

I could not imagine how the US citizens felt.

I have since taught school classes about the events and we have had a very stimulating conversation about this. One group for a project made some towers with a plane crashing and newspaper articles behind it about the events. Very powerful. I saw little lkids pretending to play it out, crashing toy planes in lego blocks -  it really had a psychological impact on the children who didnt know how to deal with it.

My father had died the previous evening & Vicky and I were with my mother; Vicky had taken my sister home to change & she called me as I was making the rounds of telephone calls to relatives; she just said 'switch on the TV, you won't believe it'... I switched on just before the 2nd jet hit & sat there agog with my mother.

Very strange day for us, & as I've mentioned in a previous thread, the news actually served to take our minds off things for a little while...

Nearly 10 years now.

I was in homeroom freshman year of highschool when the first tower hit. We were watching the coverage on tv thinking it was an accident like mostly everybody else. I went into third period spanish afterward where we were still watching the coverage on tv. The teacher came in, turned off the tv, and scolded us. He said nobody would care about this in a week and we should be more focused on our studies.

I had lunch next period. We were sitting in the lunch room and the proctor was waiting for the room to quite down to lead us in pre-meal prayer. To quite us down he came over the speaker and said that the world trade center no longer exists. We then got to watch the coverage during lunch. Next period they dismissed school as all of the city was shutting down for fear of another attack.

I went home and put the coverage on the tv while I played Warcraft 3. I remember how angry and devastated I was when it finally all sank in that day. The government has so perverted that event to justify more and more death and injustice that it produces a very strange mixture of emotion in me.
