I see your point on Chris M  Smile . My 17 year old son says anybody but Mike Mangini.   I agreewith you  Marco  M would  be a good choice so would Rod Morgenstein with is  Jordan Rudess and John Myung  connections . If  I were a betting man  I would put my money on Rod.

So it's Minneman, Mangini, Morgenstein or Maitland? What's with all the M's? Are Dream Theater prejudiced against other letters of the alphabet?

No, we're biased. DT hasn't done anything yet!

But (and Mangini reminded me) I do have a suggestion for another M that could join them: Chuck Mangione!

Your basing this opinion on what?  Ever seen him play? The guy knows how to play and he would smoke with this band,

i have seen him play drums plenty of times, as well as drum solo. i never said he was a bad drummer, but he is my least preferred drummer next to the many other "possible" candidates. i think it might have to do with his "groove" or lack-thereof. He's ok on James LaBrie - "Elements of Persuasion", but i just dont think he would fit in the DT sound.

Pat Mastelotto would destroy the Dream Theater material. I'll even go as far as to say he'd make the rest of them look like sloppy amateurs. They'd never hire him for this reason.

I like all of the other candidates listed in this thread.

I recently spoke to the manager of Steve's Music in Montreal. He says Minneman is often in that particular Steve's. When he asked, Minneman said he would turn down the DT gig if they gave it to him.

James LaBrie comments on Drummer Secrecy

The following was posted by James LaBrie on Twitter:

"Extenuating circumstances prevail with maintaining the
drummer's secrecy. Once revealed it will have been worth
the wait and understood. ;-)"

Ah good old Twitter! I can beleive that it will be worth the wait.

the same thing happened with Metallica's bassist when replaced by Pantera's bassist - it was worth the wait as he vamped the sound up considerably on Death Magnetic. I hope the same goes for Dream Theater as they remain one of my fave bands. Portnoys interview in CRPresents Prog is a revelation in the sense that he hopes they continue tho he is worried about being replaced. He is human and has feeling twards the brothers. He just needed a break as it was getting too much but the band wouldnt agree ot have a break from each other. For what its worth Portnoy can easily make it big without them as he is so well known and respected. Transatlantic is proof. The only think I have trouble with now is watching Portnoy carrying on in the DT DVDs as he is so into them and it all sounds surreal now, knowing he would soon be gone. I know things change and pple change but that was a drastic decision from Mike. And why didnt DT agree to have a break for the good of the band?

Mike reads the forums so if he is readng this I want to say - I hope he continues to make some of the best prog rock on the planet as he will always have my respect.

Rob Trujillo played for Ozzy, Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves but never Pantera. Very good bass player indeed.

Confused Trujillo played with Suicidal Tendebcies and Ozzy before Metallica (at least these two are the most famous), never in Pantera.

as for the whole secrecy behind DT's new drummer, it's getting annoying already.

Another hint at Mangini

According to Eddie Trunk — co-host of the VH1 Classic television program "That Metal Show" who has a long-running radio show, "Friday Night Rocks", on New York's Q104.3 FM — Mike Mangini, the 47-year-old session artist who has played for ANNIHILATOREXTREMEJAMES LABRIE and STEVE VAI, is strongly rumored to have joined DREAM THEATER as the replacement for the recently departed Mike Portnoy.

saw this at DTF before, I meant to post it here but I hadn't had my coffee yet. Im still really hoping it is NOT Mangin. IMO they should get someone a little younger, like in their early 30s or something.

I like Mangini. He's a good, serviceable drummer with a personality that won't get in the way. Labrie and Petrucci can thus create their vision of DT free of the shadow of Portnoy and of any drummer who would actually try to replace him.

I'm still hoping Lopez would go back to Opeth one day.... so disappointed with the new setup
I think Lopez wouldn't really match the "math" side of DT. He is MADE for Opeth.
