They offer an interest rate, unfortunately it's a negative one. |

You're equating a state-run and taxpayer funded system of police as the only possible police force. There's no reason to make this assumption. Actually worse, you're equating a state-run and taxpayer funded system where corrupt acts by cops are overlooked, encouraged, and supported by the masses and popular culture. |

I don't see the point you are trying to make. If you are suggesting something like privatizing law enforcement, then just say that.
No one said corrupt acts should be overlooked or supported.
My main point remains, law enforcement is necessary because people will not abide by the law unless they are made to.
Maybe you should stop trying to sound like a Berkeley professor and just make a point.

Oh no somebody is angry for no discernible reason. My point should be implicit in what I said. My desires for private law enforcement and approval of general disrespect for the law have been said repeatedly throughout the 250 pages of this thread.
Your point is also false. You don't use your turn signal because someone makes you. You don't refrain from punching every person that looks at you the wrong way because someone makes you. Typically the public follows laws because they math their own sense of morality. This is one of the numerous reasons that prohibitions are ineffective. People will consume what they want to consumer irregardless of the law. EDIT: You seem to be suggesting that they should be overlooked since the current culture in law enforcement supports this and you don't seemed concerned with changing anything. That ends our lecture for today. Please read Chapters 1-8 in the text. Edited by Equality 7-2521 - December 10 2010 at 12:33 |

Oh look, another scandal of massive police corruption, and none of the police are willing to admit any problem, at least the administration is trying to do something. The people are arguing that they were convicted falsely, but the police union says their arguments are invalid because they were convicted. Stunning.

Maybe you should drop this class and go back to Math 101. This is 8 chapters, not 7. |

Most people will follow most reasonable laws without the threat of punishment as motivation. I refrain from stealig because I think stealing is wrong, not because I'm afriad I'll get caught. I don't share GaryB's pessimism about human nature.
Of course, there are exceptions and for that reason I agree that we do need law enforcement. I have thought about privatized law enforcement a lot, but up to now I'm not convinced that it is a good idea. I could be convinced, probably, but so far I haven't been. Finally, I am not nearly as anti-cop as my good friend Pat. I think most police are good people doing their best at an extremely difficult job. I see the occasional cop run a red light and it pisses me off, but I see far more ambulances and firetrucks do it. Where is the outrage about corrupt firemen? |

Ohh I hate firemen too, but they're not as prevalent as cops. They also don't arrest you. So I don't bitch as much. I agree that law enforcement is needed, but I just like to point out it isn't what keeps the vast majority of people from breaking laws. You can be for changing the entire culture, a necessary move I believe, which surrounds law enforcement without wanting a private police force. |

Yo, sorry to go back a page and to unrelated...but Kevin Smith is terrible.
Most people I know like his movies because they ARE mallrats or "ZOMG AWESOME HE FILMED CLERKS IN RED BANK!" Then take pics at the sh*tty little convenience store from the movie. And yeah, with my most recent job I took the option of having max money now, with the result of a small rebate. They're giving my own money back to me? I might as well have as much as I can now then... |

I've heard stories. And lol you hate fire fighters? I can see the cops but jeez man. Solely because they are government? Because there's really no reason to dislike them... I've said it before, I do like Ron Paul, kind of. Disagreements aside (and I agree with a good number of his positions) he is true to himself, is unwavering and really believes what he says. Rare to see in politics, and while I may not be a huge fan of Ron Paul's America, he does want change. Which few politicians are really willing to do (hardly any actually). And like Penn & Teller, he does speak a lot of truth. Remember Teo, Democrats only suck a little less than Republicans Edited by JJLehto - December 11 2010 at 00:12 |

Hey Brian I'm really concerned about you for two reasons:
1) You are saying happy holidays now?! The PC thing got to you too! 2) You like St Anger? |
