Yes because if there's incriminating film of an officer the departments will just turn the evidence over and beg that the officer be charged. I'm sure cops will keep the film rolling as they blow through red lights doing 60 on a suburban road. |

I never see cops blowing lights like you describe Pat, unless they are chasing someone or heading to a medical, in which case they have their lights on.
Also, I do see cops on the news getting busted for DUI, so that's false as well. Cops likely have the same percentage rates as the rest of us for abuse, and for DUI, for anything. They're just people. Maybe a little higher because of the job stress. But nothing approaching more than 50% abusive as you describe. If I'm naive, you're blinded by cynicism and your anti-authority tendencies |

And unreliable anecdotal evidence subject to sampling biases and subjective memory.
I'll rephrase if you like. Over 50% of the cops in Philly abuse their power. When I see a cop stop at a red light once in my life I'll rethink this.

When was the last time you saw a police officer denouncing another one for corruption or abuse? Enough said. Some may be pristine and even angelical, but when their "pals" do something wrong and they close ranks to protect them, they all turn to sh*t for me

I know, I stepped out of line as a working class plebeian...I hope my wonderful oppressors dont hurt me too badly Also, I was not so sure about Obama as we know but he made an appearance on mythbusters. This makes him cool. He also mentioned blowing things up as "kind of cool" When has policy mattered in elections anyway!? He has my vote until 2028. Edited by JJLehto - December 08 2010 at 23:07 |

Reminds me my tax rebate's going to be pretty spiffy this year. First time I've had near-constant employment for a whole year.

Not near constant, but between these 2 jobs yeah, been the longest I've worked since my senior year of HS! And huzzah for tax rebates! Giving us back our own money! But nah...it's for the common good of society. What would the state of New Jersey do without this $1.50 going to medical malpractice!? |

Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Clerks 2. Having Jay and Silent Bob in his movies are a necessary but not sufficient condition for them not completely sucking. (re: any script he's written for another director). |

Don't worry, guys, if a police officer gets caught abusing their power they could potentially (if the public outcry is bothersome enough) face a fate worse than death: paid suspension
Again? He's written a good film? Mallrats was ok, but everything else: |

I won't comment on the tax issue because afterwards I would have to go to the Anger Management thread.
The cop vs citizen thing is always difficult to discuss without upsetting someone. But there are definitely two sides to this.
Yes, they abuse their power and yes, they have certain unofficial benefits that come with the uniform. And yes, they will stick together when one of their own steps across the line.
You all know the other side of this which is that they are necessary because our world is far from perfect and it gets worse every day.
Cops are far from perfect as well but untill there is a better system of enforcing the law, cops are what we have.
BTW...going on a TV show and talking about blowing things up is not nearly enough to make Obama even kind of cool.

Yes when you create the false dichotomy of abusive, murderous cops vs chaotic, lawless society, we see two sides to the situation. However, the situation luckily doesn't boil down to that.

Rebates suck. I try to minimize mine, I'm not in the business of giving government interest free loans.

I went through the early seventies and the only crimes I commited were getting high and having hair down to the middle of my back. The line was drawn with cops on one side and longhaired rockers on the other.
But my first run in with the law happened a month after I got out of the Army. A smart*ss cop got in my face and I got back in his. I was arrested for threatening a police officer and interfering with an officer in the performance of his duty.
But there is still a need for law enforcement and people prove that every time there is a natural disaster.
