^ They are definitely great, although calling them tech/extreme is a bit of a stretch IMO.

Yep, Psychotic Waltz are without peer imo, just stellar music with excellent lyrics, spine-tingling leads and real emotional content... They aren't extreme in the least but certainly very technical- well at least on those first two albums....  One of my all-time faves.  Try the followup band that the singer is in "Deadsoul Tribe"- there are some reminiscent moments musically, but it's a slightly different animal.  I heard that some of the members of Psychotic Waltz were writing a new album.... who knows what will come of it... not even sure if Buddy Lackey is involved or not...

so on the recommendation tip, check out the band Ingenium... their album "2nd sun in the eclipse" just pisses all over most technical metal... It was never officially released but there are of course ways of finding it... well worth the hunt.

figures that I am the only one who has rated it... an obscure gem...

It's amazing too how many metal bands starts with Psy
eg:
Psychofagist
Psychotic Waltz-
Psychotogen-
Psyopus-
Psypheria-
Psycroptic

others?

aside from Psychotic Waltz (who are in their own league) my favorites of that list are Psychofagist- utterly insane free-jazz post hardcore tech metal... just great!  Latest album has some sax freakouts a la Zorn.  Psyopus is on another level also, just way over the top with the insanity and shredding and bizarro riffs.  The vocals may put some off though.  The other bands are decent but fairly standard actually.

Thanks i will try Psychofagist

I have to admit not having heard much tech extreme i was in the dark about this genre, but Psychotic waltz are now one of my favourite prog metal bands - already heard first 2 albums and loved every moment. i heard they disbanded which is a tragedy.

"Mosquito" is a great album too! I only discovered this band last night thx to this thread and cant believe they had somehow evaded me all this time.

Just thanks guys, is all I can say for opening my eyes and ears to this awesome band. Huge mega star reviews coming soon, believe me.

Psychotic Waltz is a band I just never listened to, even though it was one of the first prog metal bands I've heard of. I've gotten into them recently. I must agree they are brilliant!

A great new entry to PA: Barren Earth

Check it out people, there's a couple of brilliant tracks on that Myspace site, especially Flicker.

i was about to write about CORONER, then i saw your post. Coroner is one of the bands got me into technical and prog tastes in my highschool years. Though it's rare, I still listen them. And do you know, they will play at Hellfest 2011Clap
hunger for more prog can never be quenched.

in paranthesis, If you like Opeth kind, you should listen to In Mourning and Farmakon. Both are awesome...

Seriously enjoying Leprous' Tall Poppy Syndrome right now, which has elements of tech/extreme. I recommend them highly- nice and inventive, and professional enough for it all to seem organic.

Ulcerate recently uploaded a song from the upcoming album to their myspace. It sounds like it would fit into Everything is Fire, which is a killer ablum, but I expected them to take their sound further than this. I think there is a lot more potential in this concept they have going.
