Pentagon officials say they cannot explain reports of a missile launch off the coast of California on Monday.
A CBS News helicopter captured what looked like the vapour trail of a missile rising from the water about 35 miles (56 km) offshore. BBC America Would the authorities really not know about a missile launch taking place 35 miles offshore of California? Considering spy satelites seem to be able to film an Iranian nuclear technician taking an unauthorised sh*t, is it not fair to assume that the CIA at least has the US coastline covered. I know it's big, but even so. Christ on a bike, how did we ever come through the cold war? |

North Korean Aliens, obviously.
We are lucky enough to be in one of the few parallel universes where the Cold War did not destroy the earth, that is how we made it. Edited by Henry Plainview - November 10 2010 at 04:57 |

It's a jet (vapour) contrail, not a rocket blast trail.
There are several clues to that point to this explanation - the colour, shape, speed, dispersal, lack of "fire" at the head...
It is common to see them looking like that this time of year (autumn, nothern hemisphere) around sunset.

Ok, yes Deans probably right. It surely can't be possible to launch a missile off the coast of California, unauthorised, without defence systems going ape sh*t. Makes you wonder why they bothered reporting it.

Yes, the funny thing about all the discussion on this story was that people operated that it was a given that it was a missile, and then launched into wild conjecture (was it American? Chinese? who launched it, why, what was the political message intended, etc). Very few people bothered to ask if it could possibly not be a missile.
Consider a.) we put out notices (NOTAM) any time we need to conduct a test so as to restrict the local airspace, which we did not do, and b.) no other country is dumb enough to park a sub that close to our coast (possibly even in our territorial waters, since they were so close to Catalina Island) and fire unless for some reason they really want to start a war right there and then.
