Not necessary. It's easy enough to bump one account to 40 posts, but the people we're after created multiple accounts. Multiply, and understand....

Well the guy who ruined the Rush vs. GY!BE poll made 35 accounts (if I remember correctly). That means he'd have to post 1400 times.

I don't share that thought Theriver. The thing is that only very few people join just to be able to vote in polls. Sure, they want to, but 40 posts is not a lot for a typical forum participants - who participate in discussions they are interested in.

All the more reason why it would make more sense to lift this restriction and simply focus on those few who do come along and poll-tip now and again. If it isn't a frequent desire for people (honestly, how many people would care about the outcome of a virtual poll?), the restriction makes even less sense. You're hindering the many due to the actions of few.

My understanding is that this isn't directed towards the new people but people who create new accounts just to be jerks.  So people who aren't doing that can get in by not deliberately being jerks, spamming posting, etc..  I'm not an admin, but I suspect the threshold isn't too high.

1/2" for handicap accessibility.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

But affects all new members for a time.

It is if you're a new member, excited to start participating in all the discussions... only to discover you aren't allowed to be a full member of the site until you've met this criteria you didn't even know about. I can totally see the point of those who have complained.

I do agree that most people join the site for the right reasons, but ask yourself why those same 'keyboard plankton' who rig the polls clearly also enjoy attempting to skew the album ratings as well?
Yes, it's pathetic but (re the new polls eligibility) prevention might be better than cure?

Restricting the ability to rate albums until further established as a site member makes much more sense to me. Barring someone from voting on polls, not so much. Why can't the former be enforced while the latter remain unrestricted? The second situation is a forum matter exclusively, and has no negative lasting effect on the site itself.

It would be fine if some old newbies do not encounter these voting restrictions. If a newbie has been a PA member for some time (one year? 6 months?), he should have the right to vote, although he has less than 40 posts.

How could it be done technically?

^By subtracting 6 months or a year from the current date and compare this to the signup date. Both the number of posts and the signup date are available, so this should be technically possible.

This is a forum restriction, not a site restriction. There are people that rate and review albums who do not join-in (or even read) the forum, whereas people who vote in polls are, by definition, forum members. We cannot impose a post-count threshold on people who only rate albums. Therefore we cannot use post-count as a threshold for reviews&ratings but could use the system adopted by IMDB - allow people to rate and review but ignore their rating values until they've achieved a prescribed threshold of ratings.

Actually, it's not. Not in the way you just put it, and not in the way we intended it. As usual, we get more complaints in this thread from people who are not affected by this than we get genuine questions from newbies in our admin inbox.
Apparently, it's more important tyring to make a point that is not a point than to move on, for some of you.

Theoretically this is true I suppose but I have seen no real evidence of this.

Right. It's not like any of us have any real concerns, or anything. We're just stirring up trouble for no good reason because we have nothing better to do. Wacko
