Topic: Pink Floyd's biography in Progarchives?! Posted: October 09 2010 at 10:34 |
this is my first post on PA. as i`v surfed the home page of most of the bands, i realized somethings are wrong here. as it should be so, PA should be an original, trustworthy and in same time, a reliable literature source for the people who want to know about progressive music for first time. hence, it is necessary to provide fair enough information about all of the genres and bands. regarding this fact, as all of us know, there are some SPECIAL bands who are pioneers of progressive music and MUST be considered as the initial introductions for anyone who wants to know about progressive music.
Pink Floyd is inevitably and definitely, one of the most important bands in the history of genre (if not has been the most important). and say, someone enters the PA website as the main information resource for progressive music, trying to get somethings to know about PF. what does he encounter on the main page of the band?! nothing!!! the article which is written down to describe Pink Floyd work is not even considerable as 10% of the thing that should be for their introduction. the writer of the article seems to be so unfamiliar with PF as he has indicated the very basic materials about the band, even less than basic in some parts, (look at the third paragraph that how he sums up the introduction of the band in such a careless way). and then, when you go for say, King Crimson page, you see a complete article about the band which describes all possible things in the most detailed way! i`m a KG lover as well, but to be fair, regardless of fame (which PF was and is much more famous than KG), which one has been more significantly effective in the history of rock music in general and prog rock in particular?! all of us know that the music of PF has inspired many successful rock bands, from DT, to Anathema to Nightwish to Tiamat!
now i make it short. this is the responsibility of the site admins and moderators to have the best way of supervision for the materials which is provided on PA, specially the ones which are considered as BASIC INTRODUCTION for the bands. it is a shame that a great band like PF has such a short, inadequate and unprofessional introduction (of course with respect for the writer). i hope the moderators read my post and consider it not just for PF but to support and introduce the progressive music in it`s best possible way as it should be. and anyway thanks for maintaining and building such a great web source for music lovers.

of course i want to submit a better one my friend and i`m already providing the material for it. PF deserves more than this. they are one of the few really TIMELESS bands. their music should be considered more than this. although they r not my idol since they`v had their own mistakes and flaws, but in my view, they are the most significant inspiration for many of today`s musicians. at least comparing to bands such as Yes, which is i think considered far beyond their effectiveness in rock history...
anyway Thx for reading and reply dud! hope to keep in touch!

As far as I'm concerned there's more information on Pink Floyd on PA than on all other sites combined. There are so many reviews!
You could have used your idea for a better text on Pink Floyd in a positive way, now you make it sound like some-one is to blame. Perhaps a bit to edgy for a first post.

So Pink Floyd deserves special treatment because they are undoubtedly, inevitably and definitely the most important and significant prog band?
Pink Floyd fans..

as i said, i have my own respect for the writer so i don`t blame anyone as no one is able to do any thing perfect ... besides consider urself as a beginner who comes up for PA site. what is the first thing that u pay attention to? the reviews, or the main article about the band?! consider the priority matter in structure of a website! thx for reading and reply!

Having just finished reading Nick Mason's book on the band, I think the article on PA is pretty accurate, actually.
Perhaps a bit short, but not as bad as you suggest.

I decided to take a look at that Pink Floyd bio and I agree that it's short. But surely most people are more interested in the actual album reviews???

It maybe a little on the short side, but it is fine as an introduction to the band. I think you need to realise that detailed reviews of the bands work, and also comments about the dynamics within the band, will be found on the album reviews. Also, in many of the forum threads.
A little bit negative for a first post really?

sorry - can't see any reason to claim that we are ignorant concerning Pink Floyd this is a proper bio - could be more extended, okay - but please notice that we are not a PF fan site! the only point which is questionable what I can see is that statement about 'Animals' as an 'underrated gem' which is simply subjective. the team will discuss about this issue ...

I just appreciate that someone has taken their valuable time to write something about Pink Floyd or any other band.
I wouldn't get my nose out of joint and feel insulted if I didn't agree with it.
If it doesn't suit you, or you don't agree with it, there are other websites with similar opinions. No one is forcing you to read it.
================================================================================
Myself, I manly read reviews looking for descriptions of music - One thing with PF I ask is does the particular recording hold up today as when it was released - I Just listened to Atom Heart Mother from 1970/1971- I appreciated it more today than when my musical maturity could not get Gentle Giant. The production still holds up, but the long (pyschedellica) instrumentals of the first and last songs do not, as PF and other prog bands went and did far better instrumental sections. The actual songs are still well appreciated and well done.
This review was probably not 100 words, but I believe it got the points across.
With any other PF and prog recording I would be reading to see it just average pop recording disguised as a prog recording like Genesis did from ABACAB, or some of Asia's work with prog musicians etc

Quite a few of our artist bios need a lot of work. I agree that PF's could be longer, but it's not as embarrassing as the Tool and Neal Morse bios. I don't even like those bands at all but if I had the power I would still rewrite them because they annoy me so much.

Very few of the band bios are actually impressive and/or particularly in-depth...
