Nobody. Portnoy has been too important a part of DT. They should split or at least change their name rather than have someone else drum in DT. (In the latter case, maybe they can get rid of James LaBrie while they're at it.)

Just for the sake of ability and similar but distinct styles I'd recommend three:
1) Zoltan Csorsz 2) Gavin Harrison 3) Pat Mastelotto

1. Mike Mangini - Played
on all of James LaBrie's solo records and kicks some serious ass as
you all probably well know. Also he's equally organized methodical and able to carry out a lot of the details that Mike Portnoy would have done. To my mind he is the obvious front runner.
2. Rod Morgenstein - He plays with more DT members on outside of DT projects than any other drummer but I have I hard time thinking Rod would want it. 3. Terry Bozzio - Well, he definitely has a crazier kit than MP and he played some really cool tracks on the last Korn album. Too bad Korn sucks though. 4. Gavin Harrison - Everyone knows he can stretch well beyond the confines of Porcupine Tree. 5. Jason Bitner - WTF, why not? Shadows Falls seems to have lost their steam.See More |

My money is on Mike Mangini here, seeing as he doesn't appear too busy with his current work. James LaBrie's new solo album sounds like it will be cool. Plus it will be interesting to see what they could come up with with him.
That Virgil Donati bloke from Planet X is probably my second choice of the suitable drummers that I know of. Pretty good. |

^You know, I can totally see it being Mike Mangini. And if it is I might actually be interested in giving this a chance.
Also, I just had another realization. what's going to happen with this drummer when Mike Portnoy comes back? (And he will, unless the rest of the band bar him from it somehow). They'll suddenly find themselves with a few albums worth of material wiped completely from their canon. Like Blaze Bailey in Maiden or that guy who briefly replaced Peter Nichols in IQ. I dunno, it's just kind of sad to think about. Edited by Harry Hood - September 14 2010 at 01:52 |

I suggest:
Nick di Virgilio....
but if you want a "like Portnoy's style".....
UGO LUCCHESE from the Italian band HEAVEN IF

I add some unrealistic names
here under
Mario Duplantier from Gojira, he is a polorythmical monster and one of the best double peddal drummers out there, he is utterly complex drummer
Chris Adler is more technical then you might think, he can do the odd-time stuff, he is also versitile and maybe he would like to drum for other bands as well
Brann Dailor (well that means he quits Mastodon, hell no) but it would be cool to see what he could do out of DTs music.

he's ok, but he is quite basic
I'm not much of a drummer, but i can play all his parts. They're very basic and very predictable.
He's got a good sense of timing though, i can give him that

Who are you meaning? I don't think those drummers you mentioned will join DT, beside me hoping that they don't, they probably aren't nerdy enough/devoted to that type of music enough. |

These metal drummers from Mastodon, Shadows Fall, Lamb of God, Gojira, ex-Strapping Young Lad (among others), and especially ex-Opeth (Lopez quit due to anxiety issues), etc. are unrealistic to say the least and simply not what the band needs right now. Not to downplay their skill, but there won't be any problem finding drummers that are of a higher caliber and a better fit for the band. Not to mention anyone in a successful band won't jeopardize their own career to join a band like DT (this late in the game), especially considering Mike will probably be back sooner than later and accepted with open arms.
I agree, if you're talking about that Lamb of God guy. Extremely dull drummer that one is. Although I doubt you'd be able to keep up with Chris' feet if you haven't worked quite a bit on your double bass.

yeah that's always pissed me off. why such a decent drummer is in such a terrible band. honestly the only reason i actually like one of their albums is because of him. i pretty much only liked art of balance. the vocals in that band made it incredibly difficult to enjoy it too. |

On second thought, I agree wholeheartedly with you, progger7. Actually Mark Zonder, formerly of Fates Warning would be an excellent choice and very much in the progressive Portnoy mold. Thanks for setting me on the right path.

It's funny that you mentioned Martin Lopez as I had forgotten to add him to my list before. He'd be fantastic as he can play in so many different styles, not just blast beats/death metal.

Seriously Virgil Donati would make an awesome replacement, but it'll will be funny to see Thomas Lang with his blast beats Also Dyan Elise would be awesome.

I've posted this a few times here on PA today, but as a side note to those that have mentioned Virgil Donati-Virgil, Tony MacAlpine, and Marc Boals have released a new self-titled album today for their new band called Seven The Hardway. Might be something that y'all find interesting. |
