There is only one guy I could see replacing him and it is Pat DeLeon formerly of Tiles. I saw this guy in 2005 and he could easily fill in for Portnoy or Neil Pert for that matter. He has all the chops. He has a great stage presence as well and gets along with everyone. I think when he was in Tiles they were selected to open for DT on a Euro tour. Perfect fit.

Ok. Terry Bozzio.
I know his style is nowhere close to Portnoy, relies much more on rhythmic patterns, cymbal effects, etc. But the results would be very INTERESTING, instead of trying to get someone who sounds exactly like Portnoy. This is DT's last chance at being able to change a little bit.

Along these lines I'd suggest Stewart Copeland, he would bring in the African/Carribean rhythms, jazzy feel to their current lineup.....and he has already proven he can hang with bands which might have the bighead syndrome...I mean dealing with Sting's attitude and all.

Hey thanks for that I will check them out. Pat wrote us a few times after that CalProg show but haven't heard from him in a while. Good to see him working still.

Hi,
I think that DT is probably going to take an extended break, if not over for sure.
I don't think their recent tour went as well as they thought it would and that things would go as swimmingly as they thought it might. And the music suffered because of it and they were not strong enough to ensure that they sounded right ... when that happens it really means that the band's focus is either lost or is so convoluted as to be negligeable.
For the past several years, I really thought that Jordan's contributions had diminished to the point of being completely unimportant and almost strictly incidental. John's contributions are wasted ... a bass player that good, in a band that can use it, and never does ... because a guitar player and drummer are the center of attention and the rest aren't. Eventually ... bands suffer when this happens!
Catching Mike, recently doing Transatlantic ... was a telling moment ... I have not given that a fair listen, and will reserve comment on it until I listen more to it. But I don't know many bands of "stars" that are that good ... even Liquid Tension Experiment had some nice moments but was not that great or original!

I'm not sure that Gavin is interested in DT's guitarist's metal attitude ... and between you and I I got tired of it a while back!

What do you guys think of thomas lang? I'm not a drummer by any means and i honestly don't think anyone could replace mike. But from what I've heard and seen I think lang might do good.

DT has already said they will record starting in January 2009 so no they will not take a break. It was taking a break that caused this split in the first place. As far as their tour goes they toured as a support band for Iron Maiden. If the tour didn't go well that is not their fault or any reflection on them. I saw both the TA and LTE show in Downey and I thought Mike was having the time of his life. I liked the TA show better however because i think of LTE as strictly a side project. TA really looked and felt like a band. Your right it doesn't happen often but those guys really med well together. Add in Daniel Gildenlöw filling in the cracks with Keys, Guitar, backing vocals and what not and they were solid.

Maybe
John MACALUSO from Ark, or Mark Zonder, or Virgil Donati. Dt with one of these drummers could be still awesome. Dream Theater is my favourite band of all time, they got me into prog. So of course I am sad, but man... Life goes on. they still have the potential to make great music. And that is the only thing that's important. Good luck Mike!
