Did any of Spinal Tap's drummers survive spontaneous combustion?

A serious name to throw out there: Rod Morganstein.

If a replacement can push the band in a new direction, I'm all for it. Sadly they've not produced anything in the last few years in which I've found any merit.

Here's a thought that just occured to me. We essentially already know what Portnoy would sound like in SB (if you've heard SMPT:e ), but I wonder how would NDV sound in Dream Theater.

Of all the names I've seen out there (here and elsewhere), you definitely need a guy like Virgil Donati. Someone who doesn't just have the chops, but they are also used to the demands of touring. I've heard Mark Zonder, and I love the guy, but I really don't know how keen he is these days to do big tours (just speculating on this one).

Nobody they should do a progressive metal record without drums, that would be awesome!

Why not? Both bands like to record dark, depressing albums....and maybe Portnoy's growling would wake up Wilson's monotone, somber style of vocals.

Maybe we'll now see a supergroup form ... like this:
Steven Wilson - Vocals, Guitars Mikael Akerfeldt - Vocals, Guitars Kevin Moore - Keyboards Tony Levin - Bass Mike Portnoy - Drums |

Could have been really interesting to see Franco Sesa in that spot.

I'll say the same thing I said on MMA.... he's irreplaceable.
I'm really shocked by this decision... I don't think Dream Theater will ever be the same without Portnoy. |

in all fairness to the man he was absolutely incredible in about 1969-73 period if you check out bootleg and live clips from that period, then he went about 20 years without taking drumming seriously after that not so much i find the thought of nick mason doing the double bass pedal stuff on the dance of eternity nowadays very funny the last bit of drumming i saw him do was a comic relief recording of all you need is love!

My gut feeling is that he'll be back...it may be 2yrs out....but it is his creation. He asked for a long break and the other boys did not agree, so I think think he has probably been gone for 2-3 months now. Probably has not enjoyed any touring with DT the past year.
Legally speaking....if he has been 100% written out of the Dream Theater (LLC, Company, Corporation...whatever) then maybe I change my mind and he will never be back. More than anything this would be a shock to me.

My brother mentioned Charlie Zeleny (ex-Behold The Arctopus drummer) to me. He could probably play the parts well, but since he became a session drummer, I don't know if he'd be interested in touring. I know he's worked with Jordan Ruddess before though. Just an interesting thought.
