Topic: To become a Prog Reviewer Posted: September 07 2010 at 09:53 |
Hello all,
Yes, I've read the FAQ, and no, I'm not asking to be made into a Prog Reviewer. I do have the ambition to be a Prog Reviewer, eventually, but I'm content in the meantime to continue to improve my skills at reviewing prog until I am at a point where it seems that I should be made into one.
So the point of this thread is to ask those who are in the know what areas I could improve in so that I may eventually reach this goal. Any feedback that can help me improve would be appreciated.

Well Stephen, I can tell you that your reviews are quite good and you seems to me like good candidate on Prog Reviewer in next few months. Of course, I'm not admin and so I can just tell my point of view.
You remind me myself one year ago, I also wanted to be "in", tried to improve my reviews, style, quality consistency ...
By the way, I see you're listening Persephone's Dream (or was, recently), I'm writing a review, but it's quite difficult for me in particular, as the music is very changing. I have about 200 words written, but that's not enough, I don't feel it's enough.

The Persephone's Dream review was written by me and not TheGazzardian......... GRRRRR !!!!!!!!!!!......... and it was a heck of difficult one to write too. Marty............ GRRRRRRRR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TheGazzardian: Just keep up the good work and you will get there. Being a Prog Reviewer only gives you an automatic membership in Dull Men Club and nothing else, really. So just keep on enjoying life, write reviews and explore the prog rock music scene.

Hehe, he might have seen me listening to it on my lastfm or in the "what are you listening to?" topic. And I'll have a review of it up in the near-ish future, hopefully. I agree - it is a difficult album to review, definitely requires a lot of spins to full absorb.
I think you're missing an important aspect of the Dull Men Club there - if you make an acronym out of it, it's DMC. That sounds pretty cool. "I'm part of the DMC".
Thanks for the advice both of you so far .

I thought about explaining it, but then I decided to leave it on Gazz. Well Mr. S., you will also have to drink a lot of whiskey, whose most furious advocate is our Keishiro (DamoX) from Psychedelic. You will also have to take 50km on bike daily, these are Torodd's demands (am I right ? :-D ) And don't forget my demands - you will have to watch all three Back to the Future movies for the rest of your life.
just kidding, but I suppose you figured that out.

You need to do more RPI reviews! Seriously, I think you've earned a 4th star ... keep up the good work meantime.
Oh btw, congratulations to yourself and Bernadette.

I probably should - I'm still new to RPI but I've got a number of albums I've been meaning to get around to reviewing eventually. And thanks a bunch!

Just take life easy, Gazz and be honest in your reviews. Try to become a millionaire first and then become a journalist in Playboy Magazine Present Prog. After that, you may take things as they floats past you in the big river.

XD Wouldn't that be something...

I suggest that you simply explore everything ProgArchives can offer you. I discovered bands like Soft Machine and the more obscure bands from the Canterbury scene through ProgArchives. Not to mention the Zeuhl and RIO genres. All of this has been massive mind expanding for me and I am forever grateful to ProgArchives for this. Yes, I think I have become a better person for it. Never mind becoming a collab. Just explore the genres first and live life to the full through your explorations.

I agree that ProgArchives has a wealth of music to discover - there are so many bands already I've discovered here, obscure and otherwise, that I don't know how I would have uncovered without the aid of this fine site. I think I'll always be grateful for that, and the voice that this site gives me to express my views of the music I discover.

However, the problem of mind being enhanced by Prog is that some things you enjoyed before in your life will now seem pathetic or dull. That's the price we have to pay. Of course, some may overcome it. Lucky them :-)
