I think that's what I liked about Somewhere Else was the album began with the rockers.

As for Happiness, I think it would've worked better as a single disc. I still can't get into "Threw Me Out", "Older Than Me" and "Especially True". IMO, these songs are worse than anything off Somewhere Else.

Maybe the next should be a happy medium between the two?

E

Well I adore HitR, much more so than Somewhere Else. It might have worked better as one disc, but it's still pretty solid. I'm not talking about the structure of the songs so much or how they are arranged, it's just the production is too monotonous throughout the record, which serves atmospheric songs like "Liquidity" and "The Man from the Planet Marzipan" just fine, but songs like "Woke Up" and "Thunder Fly" lack the immediacy their nature demands.

It's probably Marillion's greatest flaw. The band has such a penchant for the atmospheric that it often doesn't give the songs the life they need until they're preformed live.

Yes, I think you're right there, it probably is Marillions greatest flaw, though I have to admit I find nothing wrong with songs like "Woke Up" or "Thunder Fly": I can see why the former misses some energy in some's opinion, but I think it is a bit in the nature of that song to be 'easy'. I also happen to quite like the easygoing songs from the second half of the second CDEmbarrassed Especially "Older than Me" and "Escpecially True". I do, however, agree with you guys that the overall album sometimes just is a bit too atmospheric... Like Eric's said, Marillion is never stagnant, therefore I am very excited about hearing the new album.
I tnink the atmospherics are actually their strong point ! Too many groups just don't use them well or even at all, but Marillion are not afraid to ( No record company to oblige  I guess). I see your point about the second half of HITR, but I don't really think it detracts from the experience. It will be interesting to see how they react to this previous album on the new upcoming one !   Maybe Pete doing the tour with Transatlantic
will up the Prog element a bit from a writing standpoint. How about a 30 minute epic from Marillion ?

HiTR was the first album I reviewed on PA, and although I stand by most of my comments, I would, in retrospect, change the rating from five stars to four, if only because, as good as it is, it clearly cannot be given the same rating as masterpieces such as Marbles & Brave.

I'm really looking forward to the new album, and let's hope for yet another change in direction, because, at the end of the day, this is what I love about them, the fact that they are truly progressive!Clap

Hi Kenmar - it's extremely difficult. I have a programme called DVD Decrypter which will rip the contents of the DVD onto my hard drive, and from there you can convert to MP3 format using other prgrammes (I use Roxio), but to be honest, it really doesn't work very well at all.

I'm not an IT "geek", but I think there is a special coding format on DVD's which make this sort of thing extremely difficult. No doubt others will be able to provide a far better answerGeek

Good morning fellows !  I've done it in a rather tedious fashion, but it does work quite well. If you have the Roxio Creator program you can boot up Sound Editor and use the record audio tool. As you play the DVD in real time you can record the audio and then save it in a variety or formats. It takes time, and I do it track by track, but it does work rather well. ( I have EZ CD Creator5 ).  It's also great for pulling audio off of vinyl LP's - it has some nice sound processing ( EQ, noise & click removal, etc ) tools that are very adjustable.
I hope this helps Kenmar !

Thanks Steve. I'll try this for my vinyl to CD, as the programme I have really is a bitch to use.

Just received that e-mail myself - thanks Basileia. I'll see if I can go, although it's doubtful, because of.....

The original intention was to go to Holland, but we decided instead to have a family holiday last month with friends in Southern France, and we have spent all of our money on that. A bit of a disappointment to me personally, but, to be fair, my wife & son had not had a proper holiday in a few years, so this was absolutely the right thing to do.

what's a "discerning prog fan"? Confused

I've always loved Holidays in Eden; I listened to Holidays in eden for the first time in 1992, it was the first Hogarth album for me LOL (it was their second back then) and i still love it after all this time, it's got a special place in my heart (excuse the cheesiness). Rothery especially is amazing on this album IMO.

Oew, how nice; spending time with your family is of course much more important! Smile
Anyway, I think you've seen Marillion enough in your life already to be able to miss this one, haven't you? You're lucky!

Sorry if this is kind out of the blue, but Gazpacho's Night album is really good.  I mention it in this thread as it sounds like h-era Marillion.  Really good stuff!

I think that Gazpacho might have been an opening act for Marillion at the time of that album.  I learned of Gazpacho from the Marillion fan club magazine where they talked about this great band that was opening for them.
