20k scholarship is pretty substantial... Jeez, what were the yearly fees!

Typically, unless you are an amazing, brilliant, unbelievably driven person, the best academic aid you can get from a private school that's good but not nationally well known is around half of the total cost of tuition+board, I got a similar offer for a private school in Texas, but it worked out to be about the same as W&M without aid so I went there. Many of the more prestigious schools like Notre Dame have such great demand that they don't really give academic scholarships at all, except for a few for some godlike super-students. There were people at my school that got full rides and a living stipend and money to do some sort of research/activity, and we all regarded them with fear and awe. I'm not sure if I ever actually met one, though. But of course they still give athletic scholarships....And if you're making over $50,000 a year they expect you to be able to pay it up front and if you have to take out a loan that's your fault for not saving properly.

HOLY SH*T, HEADHUNTERS! Soylent Green is next! But you're pretty much right about the scholarship stuff. I did the same thing you ended up doing.
