Topic: George Harrison's Beatles songs Posted: August 14 2010 at 08:52 |
Since The Beatles are included in this large umbrella of Progressive Music categories on this site it should be within bounds to have a Beatles poll...
I believe the list above includes all of "The Quiet One's" songs that appeared during his time in the Beatles. Some of these songs are admittedly obscure, but I didn't want to omit any songs considering how widely heard the Beatles catalog has become.
My personal faves are Blue Jay Way, Something, Old Brown Shoe, Here Comes The Sun, Piggies, If I Needed Someone, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

Something was a personal favorite of Frank Sinatra and he always made a point of praising the song writer skills of the Lennon/McCartney partnership because of this song. Frank Sinatra's version is actually very good.
So I voted Something because it is one of the best love songs of all time.

While my Guitar gently weeps is my favorite Beatles song! Good one Mr. Harrison and good work on the guitar solo Mr. Clapton.

My favourite Beatles song is While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Another of my favourites is Here Comes the Sun.

Here Comes the Sun just barely beats out While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Taxman.

Yellow Submarine is far from the Beatles' best work, but I've always had a soft spot for "It's All Too Much" and "Only a Northern Song" (the former got my vote)

George made worthwhile contributions to the Beatles song catalogue, but didn't really have the same level of class as Lennon-McCartney. His best two songs were While my guitar gently sleeps and Here comes the Sun. He tended to be rather derivative in his structures and flow of melody was often lacking, more like B-sides of a single. Without probably intending to, he took other's ideas and developed them as his own. My Sweet Lord was sued for plagarism, and the whole concept of Something was taken from a James Taylor song Something in the way she moves (he produced James Taylor for Apple). But again, I stress that his contribution was worthwhile, probably suffering from proximity to two exceptional songwriters.

^ All Things Must Pass suffered from proximity to no-one. An absolute classic. I would put him on a par with the other two

Blue Jay Way. I love the post rock vibe of that song, and the fact that this song was released like 35 years before post rock.

It always amazes me to see that I Me Mine on Let It Be is sooooo overlooked.
Here Comes The Sun and Guitar Gently Weeps round out the top three.
I'd also mention Badge that (from Cream) was written during Beatles days.

I Need You, especially for the great guitar sound, but he did lots of other good ones like Here Comes the Sun and It's All Too Much (Steve Hillage did a great progged up version of that).
