I dunno. I wouldn't have noticed it either until I really payed attention to the riff at the chorus of "Naked Burn". The "saaave yourself" part. And then everything just started falling into place a bit. Plus, all the members will say that they count Neurosis as a huge influence so, I dunno, I'm not saying they ARE post-metal, I'm just saying that's what I hear them as.

No. Just... no. ISIS and Mastodon share a similar heavy tonality and sludgy tendencies, but Mastodon are not post metal. Not remotely so.

I actually think of them as more of a post metal band. Play "Oceanic" by Isis and "Leviathan" back to back and you'll get where I'm coming from.

If anyone asks me to describe Mastodon, my answer is usually "Imagine Motorhead playing early Rush."

Psychedelic/Progressive Sludge Metal. They're metal; no doubt about that. Wonderful band, BTW. Brann is one of the best metal drummers out there in the current scene.
Oh, and I think they do have that "southern" sound to them... they listen to a lot of blues and southern rock as well as a multitude of progressive music. Two or three members are from Georgia, I believe. |

I realy like Trampled Under Hoof when the riff just destroys everything and sounds like a mountain is falling to pieces, (the riff in the main - verse), drungrungdrugdrungdrung, drungrungdrugdrungdrung, drungrungdrugdrungdrung, drungrungdrugdrungdrung, (well so it sounds in my head) 5 times is it repeated |

Prog sludge metal.
I think there are a couple things that really help make Mastodon the the best modern metal band: They're extreme, but not completely so. They walk a fine line between the traditional heavy metal and more extreme metal genres in terms of heaviness. They helped me bridge that gap and it gives the band a lot of appeal on all ends of the metal spectrum. They've always focused on excellent melody. Even in their earliest stages as a band (when they were the heaviest and most extreme), their music always gave way for strong melody. Examples: March of the Fire Ants, Blood and Thunder, Hunters of the Sky, Ghost of Karelia, to name a few. While there's enough raucous headbanging energy in there to keep metalheads satiated, there's still plenty of excellent melody that progheads love. Brann Dailor. A lot of people likened them to eclectic metal, and a lot of that is due to Brann's drum proficiency. His drumming stands far away from metal drumming stereotypes like blast beats and machine gun bass pedals. His focus on dynamics gives the band the energy that ties all their elements together and gives it a boost of energy. His incredible drum fills and interspersing techniques are really unique to the band alone. I've got some more reasons in mind but I have to go. Case in point, Mastodon rules.

They're the one prog-influenced sludge-type metal band who made it out of the bars of the deep south. There are plenty more all over the place (but, admittedly, none as good). And despite their geographical origins, I don't understand why people slap the "southern" label on their music.
