ACR: I think your apprehension about "harmful lyrics" is always going to create a negative space between you and music. Fergie's London Bridge is not dangerous or disturbing. It is stupid. It's certainly nothing to be afraid of though. I think misunderstanding youth culture over such anxieties is always going to make it hard for you get a balanced picture of what young people actually listen to. And btw, it is nonsense that lyrics being sexual is a new thing. Pop music lyrics have ALWAYS been sexual. Nowadays they're just more honest about it. Or is Tutti Frutti about playing canasta or something.
 
Anyway, I can say that my 2 and a half year old likes Kaipa's new album, In The Wake Of Evolution and also Ommadawn. She always goes nuts at that flute part early on in Ommadawn. But that's a 2 and a half year old, I can imagine a teen finding them a bit "lame" or even "gay". I would suggest perhaps Coheed And Cambria for teenaged ladies. Remember I'm saying use Coheed And Cambria as a gateway drug to other prog, I'm not suggesting they're the pinnacle of progressive music. Move to proggier stuff later.

Well, not a teenager but my daughter likes "Musical Box" very much (she is 7)

I think this about hits the nail on the head.  You have to familiarize the listener with prog's approach to structure and this cannot be done with something like Genesis which even some prog fans find hard to take seriously simply because they sound twee and fey.  There's nothing intellectual or emotional about this, just the simple fact that you wouldn't be prepared for stuff like Genesis by listening to what comes on the radio because they don't approach non-classical/jazz music that way anymore.  Conditioning is a very very important factor that affects the listening experience.  I did not grow up on 80s pop/rock hits and I would have found it harder to warm up to prog than I actually did because I know friends who grew up on that and can't stand prog.

Well, I'm fifteen, and Genesis was one of the first prog bands I truly loved, if not the first. 
Of course, my adoration for them didn't really flourish until a few months after I discovered "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" and "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight", but I digress.

Getting a teenager to like Genesis is a much more realistic goal than getting them to like, say, Mr. Bungle or the Residents, or even Yes. 
As intellectual as Peter Gabriel's lyrical social appraisals are, the music is much more straightforward and immediately listenable than Yes's.
Hell, I got a few of my pop-music-loving friends (nothing wrong with a good pop song, don't get me wrong) to love Genesis and King Crimson...and the Residents, but that's beside the point.

And, of course, most teenagers have a bias against the big G because of the Phil Collins years. And you can't blame them for not knowing the big PG, because Collins popularized them. A music aficionado once explained to me that he 'respects Phil Collins but doesn't like Genesis'. So there's already that drawback.

And most generalizations are bound to be wrong (of course, there's that 'all generalizations are wrong' paradox, but that's beside that point). 
I'm sure there are dozens of teenage users here, like myself; I mean, that goes without saying, and what band has the most 5-star album ratings? Hm? Oh, right, Genesis. Wink

I really hope that progression made sense....

A few years ago (when my next door neighbour's son was about 15) we were settling down to Sunday lunch and I could hear music blaring outside. He was listening to this whilst washing his Dad's car.
 
So, I went outside and was just about to tell him to turn it down when I realised he was listen to "Selling England By The Pound" Smile
 
So, I said "Hey, Adrian! Turn it up!!" LOL
 
We've recently took our kids (11 and 13) to see G2 (excellent English Genesis tribute band) and they quite enjoyed it Wink

Yeah I think if you have  music going in the background all the time and its prog your kids will eventually warm to it. Heck I even liked some of my dads music after hearig it 50 times straight in a week. He was into some horrible old country too. I will never forget A Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash - now I actually think its a fun song.

I enjoyed Genesis at 14, my first album, of course was Nursery Cryme, The best!Wink

My daughter is 21 and can't stand ANY classic era Prog. She doesn't mind Tool or Porcupine Tree.......so at least we have some common ground. My son is 19 and loves Metal. But he'll also listen to Tool, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, and most "metal" prog. I recently played Mahavishnu Orchestra for him and he loved it

Nice to see this variety of ages (and ages of children!).I have been listening to all of Genesis since I was twelve, and now I'm 14. I'm not sure if I see my age on this site as a restriction to unmoved opinion, moreso as a chance to listen to more music, as I have went through early genesis to deep artists like Tangerine Dream, The residents, Mike Oldfield (semi- deep cut, whatever), and Neu.
 
So in other words, yes, teenagers can listen to early Genesis.

Look it is painfully simple. Before they enter their teenage years hook them on the Beatles. Then just tell them Genesis got their big break in the U.S. when John Lennon was asked in an interview what if any new music he liked. And, the great part is that it's a true story.

I'm 15, and Genesis was one of the last classic prog bands I got into. I don't think they're better than GG, KC, Yes, PF or JT, but better than ELP, methinks. They're great, but I never really got into their classic period (Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme) the way I feel I'm supposed to. Supper's Ready has never felt like the masterpiece most people think of it as. Maybe later? Selling England is great, though.

Seems like everyone had such an easy time getting into Genesis =p I heard my first Genesis album when I got it from my music teacher since he knew my favorite bands at the time were: Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull. The album I got was Foxtrot, and I thought it was extremely boring, I listened to it 3 times and just gave up. Later on, I found this site (maybe 4 years later), and by that time, I had slowly moved away from the classic rock acts and started listening to bands like: Yes, Gentle Giant and Gong. But I had still avoided Genesis like the pest, and to my horror. Genesis was the most beloved and well-rated artist on the whole site, I was pretty annoyed by that fact. But after being fed 1000 of "best genesis song" polls, I decided to pick up Foxtrot again, and I suddenly enjoyed, even to the grade that it's my favorite album right now. And now... I'm gonna listen to... Foxtrot.
