Flicker is great, but could have been so much more. When I first heard it I was expecting a 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' like epic, but then it just fizzles out after 3:30 mins. It's the only song that really irritates me because of that. Buying New Soul... now there's a perfect example of... well how to write/perform a perfect song I suppose!

Yeah me too. I would like the next album to completely surprise us. In fact, maybe its time for a new era of PT! The psych era lasted for four albums. The pop song era for two. The heavy prog/metal era has now been with us for four albums. The next one should go in yet another direction. I don't think PT have stopped their evolution yet.

Just now, I ordered The Pineapple Thief's new album, the first two Blackfield albums, and an IEM download (Have Come For Your Children) from Burning Shed. Listening to IEM now. It's very space rock. Even moreso than early PT.

Sounds great Kashmir. If you haven't got it already, I'd also recommend the Live CD/DVD package of Blackfield Live In NYC. It's an excellent gig at a reasonable price! |

I've definitely seen this before, I'm at work so I don't have my actual CD's with me but isn't this an image from Deadwing? I'm thinking either the back or something from the inner sleeve. The black thing is a keyhole if that sparks anyone else's memory. |

An album I've been playing a lot is Signify.
I'd always looked upon this as the weakest of the classic early PT cds, and sort of neglected it over the years. I think that was a little unfair, on reflection. Whilst I don't think it's as good as Up The Downstair or TSMS there's a lot of great stuff on it. Waiting 1 and 2 are awesome and I've always loved Intermediate Jesus, that's a fantastic track (and a brilliant title
 ). Dark Matter is pretty special too. Hell, it's all good.One thing I will say is the bonus cd on Signify isn't as good as the bonus cd for UTD or TSMS. However the real "extra" cd from this period I suppose is the Metanoia album that was recorded during those sessions. That's a brilliant cd in my opinion but one that's almost universally loathed
 . Just interested to see what the rest of you guys think.

Great to hear Kashmir, I'm pretty sure you'll love the two Blackfield albums. The live CD/DVD is a must if you enjoy those two as well.
RE Roj on Signify; it's the disc I visit the least, although it's still fantastic. Dark Matter is absolutely stunning, and Waiting Phase One is beautiful. As far as Insignificance grows, I really love the Wake as Gun I and Wake as Gun II tracks as well as Smiling Not Smiling, although I rarely visit the rest... Metanoia is a fantastic album for studying or writing assignments to, but again, I rarely visit it. I find it a bit straining to listen to the entire thing one way through in full focus, though. |

I'm pretty sure I'll love Blackfield, based on the samples I've heard, and based on your words. I've heard its like the SD/LS era of PT. If so, I'll adore it, as they're two of my favourite PT albums.
As for Signify, I love that album. I spin it maybe the most out of PTs space rock era. It's a very transitional album (half songs, half spacey ambience), and you can hear the seeds of their later work starting to happen. Waiting, Sleep of No Dreaming, and Dark Matter are all gorgeous songs. Every Home Is Wired almost sounds like a Stupid Dream era song, with its vocal harmonies. Even their metal side is hinted at, with the title track's riffing. As for Metanoia, well, that's one I don't play that often. I can take it in chunks, but I rarely get through it all in one sitting. It's better for background ambience, than for actual attentive listening. If I had a gun to my head, I'd have to pick that as my least favourite PT release. It's not bad, though. No PT album is. |

According to someone over on the PT Forum website, PorcupineTree were raved about in the UK Times newspaper, by the guy from the band Pendulum (who are making it big with their new album)! The Times is a pretty major newspaper, so this exposure is certainly a good thing.
On one hand, I like it that PT are our little secret. But on the other, I really do think they deserve more success. The Pendulum guy said that 'Have you heard of this band Porcupine Tree? Steve Wilson is one of the best songwriters in the UK'

Eh, if they were any bigger, it'd be a lot less fun to go to shows and to get the Sp. Editions... There's no chance that I'd have got the Red edition of Anesthetize if they were as big as say Muse or Radiohead.
I definitely would've enjoyed the show a lot less too, and at a higher price I might add. |

Yeah. I see your point. If PT were Muse or Radiohead big, there's no way in hell we'd get either the red or grey editions! Ticket prices would be a lot higher.
The media is partly to blame for PTs less than A league status. The mags and papers kind of anoint a few darlings and write about them nonstop. Like the above mentioned Muse, for one example. So whenever Rolling Stone or someone writes 'PT are a band you may not have heard of', well, duh. It's because you guys never promote or write features on them!

Also, can't wait for this tuesday, the Anesthetize sp. ed. ships then. Seriously, this afternoon at JB hifi, it was a massive strain to refrain from buying the standard
Glad I did though. Rather see (and hear) it in Bluray for the first time. |

When I was in JB Hi Fi last time, I just was forced to buy it! Couldn't resist. I'm still excited for the special edition though, with the Blu Ray and audio discs. And the lovely shiny packaging and art book. PT really do have lovely packaging which looks great on your CD shelf. I have to stop myself walking into JB Hi Fi these days, as I can't seem to come out without buying something! I may have to put a lock on Burning Shed's website as well, for the same reason! Speaking of PTs great artwork, what's your favourite album cover? I really like the Lightbulb Sun design, myself. And In Absentia is a good one, it really creeps me out.

JB hifi sure know how to bring me down; nearly every friday I stop by and leave with a CD when I'm usually just planning to walk past straight through to the bus stop
The one which immediately jumps out at me is always Lightbulb Sun, love the grey photo with the glowing orange. The original Stupid Dream art is great, although the art on the remastered packaging looks like a Sony ad Really dislike their new choice of art for that one.
I really love Signify as well. In all honesty, their art has been getting less spectacular over the years for me. UTD through Stupid Dream have amazing art, and IA/Deadwing/The Incident all seem a lot less intriguing and multi-faceted to me. Nil Recurring has pretty cool art, though. Especially the booklet. |

Yes, I prefer the original SD art, to the reissue. It does look like a Sony ad campaign.
The photography in their booklets is still quite interesting. The promotional photos by Lasse Hoile for FOABP and The Incident are creepy and suitably unnerving. I've got a few PC wallpapers of some of the FOABP/Incident promo photos.
