I keep waiting for you to convert him into a full-blown fan, but so far all's that we have gotten out of Micky is a concession for Caress of Steel, and it is highly unlikely that Rush would play Fountain of Lamneth or The Necromancer.

I Think I'm Going Bald might be more appropriate for them to play now, but I don't see it happening.

A tour will be great, hopefully, proceeded by a new album. Talk of a Rush concept album has me excited. Talk of Rush just releasing singles makes me sad, although I'll take what I can get.

I can live with that.... in fact.. it's been too long since I've listened to Caress of Steel... that goes on next Smile

though in my defense....Caress of Steel is not the only Rush album I've fawned over around here... just the only prog album. (not going there again though .. I think I've said my piece enough of that over the years LOL

) Signals has always been a favorite Rush album of mine. Loved it so much that I didn't like what they did after it... and turned me off the group for many years.

Hi, guys,

I´m a 18-year-old Rush fan from the Netherlands. And well, at the Marillion thread (I'm a huge Marillion fan as well) Lazland launched the idea of the visitors of that thread giving their favorite song from each studio album accompagnied by a brief explanation of why, a few months ago. I was wondering which Rush songs are considered the summa, so I thought why not launch the same idea on the Rush appreciation thread? (I've shallowly searched through the pages of this thread for the same idea, but haven't found it - sorry if it's already been discussed!). Anyhow, this is my list, for as far as I was able to choose:

Rush (disgusting cover, by the way!): I haven't ever really listened to this album, but I love the intro to "Working Man"

Fly by Night: "Anthem" - The kick-off of Rush's first real album, IMO, nice proggy Tom Sawyer-esque song winning of the mid section of "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" due to the latters horrifyingly bad verse.

Caress of Steel: "The Fountain of Lamneth" - it depends on the mood I'm in, actually, and although it isn't a cohesive song, it always cheers me up, I don't know why; it's my happy-song. At this moment it wins from "The Necromancer", but it may change any time (it is a pitty with "The Necromancer" that the spoken intro is that soft, it really kills the ambiance, IMO.

2112: "2112" - definitely the best song, though most of the songs on the record are great. How the protagonist of the song learns to play the guitar, what more can I say?

A Farewell to Kings: "Xanadu" - I equally love "Xanadu" and "Cygnus X-1", but my love for Rush started with "Xanadu", so it has the edge. The ambiance created is absolutely one of the best soundscapes I've ever heard in ány song!

Hemispheres: "The Trees" - (Maybe this one would have lost to "La Villa Strangiato" if the latter would've had vocals and strong lyrics) A brilliant short song, with a nice soundscape, too and a very nice comparison (?!) with the Canadian-American relation.

Permanent Waves: "Natural Science" - In my opinion the last real Rush-epic ('ve never cared much for "The Camera Eye"). I love the emotional mood at the start with the echoing vocals, before the kick-off "Our causes can't see their effects!"

Moving Pictures: "Vital Signs" - Really nice mellody and it doesn't sound as polished as the other songs in my opinion. It also features some interesting genres.

Signals: "Losing It" - A very hyperactive, emotive song at the start and then builds up before laying back just a few seconds and then keeping the pass at a higher level than before, when the violins kick in; again a lay-back and then the song really starts. "For you, the blind who ones could see, the bell tolls for me"

Grace Under Pressure: "Red Sector A" - Just because of the sentence that starts with "I clutch the wire fence until my fingers bleed..." this song has got the edge!

Power Windows: "Mystic Rythms" - Mystic really was the right word for this song: the intro is very African/electronic-like and then the guitars kick in and the words flow, but the song doesn't seem to have started, unitl the chorus.

Hold Your Fire: "Mission" - the officious title song of the album, very proggy song with cohesive instrumental/verse/chorus-sections, from very busy verses, to relatively calm choruses and totaly a different bridge, which is extremely captivating when the words flow in again with the six drumkick.

Presto: ---- Sorry, I haven't listened enough to this album to be able to pick a song at the moment and do the record right.

Roll the Bones: "Bravado" - I love the tender singing with that rough edge in Geddy's voice at the opening words.

Counterparts: "Animate" - Not one of my favorite albums, I have to say. This song wins due to its extensive concert play.

Test for Echoe: "Test for Echoe" - Though "Resist" is damned good as well (this album is way underappreciated and definitely better than its preceder!). IMO, the album is way more proggy than the three preceding albums and I like the hardrocklike style, too.

Vapor Trails: ---- Again sorry, I haven't listened enough to this album to be able to pick a song at the moment and do the record right.

Snakes & Arrows: "Workin' Them Angels" - Nice optimistic intro, before the short druminterlude and then getting back to the hardrocklike style the album posesses.

Well, that's it for now, though tomorrow I'd be making a completely different list!

interesting.... there are some gaps in my later day Rush... I simply didn't like where they went and never really came back to the group.. but who better to ask the best Rush.. than one who don't drink the cool-aid and just loves great music.. and there is lots with this group hahah.

Rush - Working Man... hell yeah.. what else is there to add.

Fly by Night - sure a couple of the tracks get the love... but for me.. the album sparkles for Best I Can and Beneath, Between, and Behind. Nothing special I supose .. they just flat out are smoking and that is often the difference between a great album and lesser albums.. the quality of the 'filler'.

Caress of Steel - hah...   The Necromancer... it is all we love Rush for... killer killer musicianship.. yet so damned campy with the D&D nature that you come to love it.. just like a best friend with the lazy eye or the girlfriend with imperfect skin. You love it.. not in spite of.. but as much FOR it's imperfections as it's perfections. A completely underrated album .

2112- don't like the album as much as others.. but like sections of the title suite.. and of course A Passage to Bangkok is classic early Rush.

A Farewell to KIngs - Cygnus X-1... .. lordy.. right there with The Necromancer as my alltime favorite Rush track. Surely more 'progressive' in sounds in style.. and thought it was the best Rush ever did in the realm of 'traditional' prog rather than just filling the virtuosity side of the prog ledger. Then again.. they really didn't do that much. They caught the wave late.. and bailed when everyone did..

Hemispheres -   Circumstances for me on this album.. but this album never has been a favorite.. much like 2112.

Permanent Waves - Rush goes AOR .. and finds their real talent and loses the geeks.. but gains real mainstream radioplay..so of course.... Spirit of the Radio. Overplayed? Sure.. but why is it overplayed... duh.. it's a great frickin song hah

Moving Pictures - Tom Sawyer.. duh....   the song that inspired countless kids worldwide to try playing the drums.

Signals - man I love this album. Another duh choice here.. Subdivisions... I thought one of the best 'songs' Rush ever wrote.

after that though... ehhh..   didn't really like where they went until Roll the Bones..

Roll the Bones - Ghost of a chance....   no.. it isn't the Necromancer.. but it is simply a great song.

Counterparts - Rush fans world wide rejoyced...a return of the Rush they knew... and they gave us a last great album.

tempted to say Stick it out... great song.. but going with Leave that thing alone.... couldn't go through the list and not pick an instrumental.

after that... no way.. that is for fans to decide...

Sweet, my wife and I are totally going to the Pittsburgh show. I'm pretty excited, this will be the fourth time that I've seen Rush, again putting them at the top of my concert going career. Currently, I've seen both Rush and Genesis three times.

6 more days until the Rush show here in Kansas City (2nd date of the tour, I believe)!!! Besides Marillion in Montreal last year, I haven't been this pumped for a show in ages.

I will attending the Syracuse show. I am so pumped for this one. Caravan is an excellent tune. BU2B is growing on me. I do hope to hear Faithless. And of course, The Camera Eye.

I'd love to hear "Marathon" or "Middletown Dreams". The former has always been a favorite of mine since the time I bought the album, but the latter has really caught on with me within the last couple of years.

I'd also like to hear "Countdown". Always been a favorite of mine.

The star of this show, however, is going to be Moving Pictures. I don't know about you guys, but I love it when bands perform entire albums in sequence. The crowd is going to lose their minds when "The Camera Eye" begins.
