Unfortunately, this doesn't capture the extended, thunderous applause that followed with the band looking at each other in disbelief. Hopefully it'll be on the DVD.

This merely catches the tail end of the applause, but it had gone on for several minutes before this particular person recorded it.

By far one of the best live versions of "The Great Escape" that I've ever heard or seen.

Eric, posted a Loreley DVD review today with some personal recollections from back in the day.  Dedicated to you my friend!  Boy did we have fun watching that disc, what a blast.  Smile
...that moment you realize you like "Mob Rules" better than "Heaven and Hell"

Boy, I'm really looking forward to the DVD's, Eric. Though I don't think I will buy both of them, my pocket money will not suffice, I think. I'll rethink it when they both are released, though! Really looking forward to the Weekend :D

It took me long enough to do this, but after the girls were in bed, I cut out the lights, dragged out the headphones and cranked Brave and really sank myself into it. Listening to each little nuance that accentuated the music and the story even more.

This really is (to my ears) the best thing they've ever recorded. Utterly brilliant.

Luckily, Marillion is one of those things that my wife will show a little latitude on. She knows my love for these guys and normally allows me to get thing without resistance (but within reason).

Try to get both, if you can. Both have their own vibe and characteristics.

I did exactly the same on Saturday night when Glynis had gone to bed. An incredible experience.

Eric, I was just looking through your Marillion CD reviews, and see you don't have any Fish era stuff listed yet ( as well as dot.com with H ).  What do you think about filling in those blanks ?  It would be interesting to see your take on each album from that period. I know Clutching At Straws is your fave from that era, and I agree because you can really hear the sonic trend they developed much farther with H on Season's End.  How about reviewing these ?
Cheers.

Yes, I'd like to see these too. Funnily enough, I've only gotten round to reviewing Script from that era, so I really must get my finger out and review the rest.

I'm sure all of you received the new eWeb Newsletter with the new prices for the Live CDs.

Bought Friends, Family and Unplugged at the Walls. Can't wait to hear them.

Tremendous oversight on my part, eh? I really should. Problem is I don't do a ton of reviews anymore. Not really a problem as it is laziness, I suppose.

This has prompted me to drag out Misplaced Childhood, however.

You did good, Marlon. I don't spin Friends that much because of all the covers, but did enjoy it the last time I listened to it. They do a great version of Crowded House's "She Goes On".

Family and Unplugged are essential, though. The live version of "Abraham, Martin & John" will damn near bring a tear to your eyes. Here I am saying I don't care for cover versions for Friends, but enjoying this cover version. It is very good, though.

Wait until you hear the re-interpretation of "Alone Again In The Lap Of Luxury".

Reevaluation time today for me. I don't think I've gotten round to reviewing Somewhere Else, but I think I've said before on the thread that it is, to me, one of the more disappointing albums from the band, and a three star at most.

However, coming back today on the train from a particularly difficult meeting (dealing with redundancies), I decided to give it the first play on the MP3 player in some time. Know what? I really do need to revisit this one more often, and my opinion.

Exquisite vocals from h, incredible understated guitar work from Rothery, Kelly on top form, all backed up by the best rhythm section in the business. I was actually taken away, for probably the first time, at the sheer emotion of it all. Perhaps that had something to do with my mood, but, nevertheless, definitely the most enjoyable experience I have had with this particular work.

This just in from bands Facebook page:

Steve h, the voice and words of experimental art-rockers, Marillion, has also quietly made a name for himself as a solo artist. He has done so over the years by marrying styles as diverse as XTC, Japan, Blondie and The Stone Roses in his 8 piece "h band". In 2008 he took to the stage alone under the banner "h Natural" ...for a series of sold-out shows across Europe. These shows quickly drifted from their initial "An evening with" format to audience-request free-for-all's, as he abandoned the set list in response to cries for Marillion-favourites along with covers from artists as diverse as Kraftwerk, Glen Campbell and Elvis.

May 14th is his birthday.
"I intend to live until I'm 102. Come and celebrate as I step into middle-age."

Expect an evening of surprises and a chance to hear the soul of Marillion stripped bare

Not sure if this has been posted, but I was on the MySpace page for Venezuelan band Echoes and one of the songs on their music player is a cover of That Time of the Night from Marillion.  Some of you might want to check it out.  http://www.myspace.com/echoesve

I decided to randomly play 25 songs from iTunes so that I can post a list.  I haven't played random in ages.  Anyhow, I thought that y'all would like to know that Marillion's King was the first track selected.  And just for posterity purposes, Rush's The Pass live version from Rush In Rio was second.

It's really not as bad as people made it out to be. I've read that Somewhere Else had the misfortune of following up the brilliant Marbles. They were wanting to craft something that stood on it's own rather than regurgitating Marbles. Some see it as a failure, but I think it's a brilliant album (I like it more with every listen). I can't get into "The Last Century For Man" still, but enjoy the album as a whole.

Definitely have to put Somewhere Else into the player now and revisit it. But tonight, I had a business meeting in NYC, so I took Marillion Rochester (yep, I donated) with me for the drive in from north NJ. No traffic into the city, so I only got through all but "Easter" from Disc 1, including a brief sit in the driveway to finish "Estonia" before going into the house. Just, wow ... Sure, there are some hiccups as you'd expect from a live recording, but personally, I like that rawness in live recordings. To me, the sequencing of "Lavender" into "Afraid of Sunlight" is just brilliant. I always thought that opening with "Season's End" was a bit strange, feeling that "Alone Again" or "Hard as Love" would make for a much more energetic kick-off, but seeing as "Season's End" is one of my favorite vocal performances from H, so all is forgiven. And "Garden Party" is just a genius way to cap the show, isn't it?

Cheers,
Michael

AgreedThumbs Up Somewhere Else is greatly overlooked and under appreciated (which indeed maybe is a result of it being the follow-up of the absolute, brilliant Marbles - I have to admit that, when I first listened to the album, I wasn't blown away, and I do consider it a lesser album than Marbles or Afraid of Sunlight for that matter, but those two are just damned good. I think "A Voice from the Past" and the title track are the best songs on the record; for me "The Last Century for Man" is a very good third together with "Faith", though the latter one is actually more like a Marbles-songClap

To me this album is a Clutching at Straws of the h-era: it is a very good album, but doesn't reach the hights of the best Marillion records, like CaS doesn't next to Fugazi for example.

Joren
