I wouldn't buy the Friends album; I'm not really into covers I might buy the This Strange Convention DVD though. Is that one good Joren?

You kidding me?! It is a very good DVD, even the Saturday-(Friends-)night is very enjoyable.
The quality of the recording isn't that good, but that doesn't bother me at all (it's not thát badTongue) and I think it was was because they hadn't planned on releasing a DVD on the convention, but they saw the recorded material and decided it would be fun to release...
If you can, you should buy that one, JoelSmile

(By the way, what does your Marillion discography look like? Which albums and DVD's, etc. do you have? Just interestedEmbarrassed)

I think I might - I was considering it a while ago. This Strange Engine is my favourite Marillion album, so seeing the whole thing live would be awesome

Ow, yeah!!! Holland. 2011 will be me first Marillion Weekend if I can afford itEmbarrassed Luckily it's in my homecountry, so the trip won't be that a problem.
But, those of you who have already attended any Marillion Weekend, there are three evenings with a liveshow, but what are you expected to during the days themselves? Or what options are there to do? And does anyone of you know what it'll cost aproximately? I'd better start saving, ay?

As far as the getting together is concerned I don't think my presence would enrich you grown-ups that much, seeing that my English isn't good enough for me to keep up with you (Dutch would be no problem at allEmbarrassed) and your Marillion-experiences quite outweigh mine. ^^ It's a great idea, thoughClap Should be at a Weekend, I reckon, that'd be the best gig to get The Round Table together.

I'm deeply considering flying over for the European weekend, Joren. Going to have to see how much it's going to cost to fly over.

I bought the Friends disc because I'm a completist (to a fault). I've listened to it twice and they do play some rare Marillion tunes and b-sides ("Holloway Girl", "The Release"); but, yes, the rest are covers. I do love their take on Crowded House's "She Goes On", though.

Get the Family CD, though. Top shelf!

This Strange Convention DVD is VERY solid. Plus, hit has the Family performance (as well as Friends).

I know I'm up for it. Still over a year down the road, but if it's a possibility, then I'm going to try to make it over.

I have to side with Steve on this. It's a great sounding disc. And if Racket still has a copy, go for the 2 disc version. The retail is a 1 disc release.

Well, I just listened to Anorak in the UK and I'd have to say it really is a phenominal live performance. The quality of the disc itself sounds better to me than Made Again which is a good live album, too! The thing is, the great feeling Made Again provides you with, is mainly due to the second disc - the marvelous live performance of Brave in its entirety. The first disc does not really strike me as irriplaceable. Apart from all this, I think I prefer h's vocals on Anorak in the UK to those on Made Again, but that's just my taste.

All things considered, Marillion is a great band for live shows!!!Big smileClap

I think I'm right in saying that Made Again was released by EMI after the band left the label for the first time and, thus, they didn't have a great deal of input into the record, much in the same way as The Theiving Magpie was released after Fish left. Both are, IMHO, fine LPs, but lack that band input that makes Anorak so much more special.

And, of course, we now have a whole host of live recordings by the band themselves on Racket that shows them at their very best, in other words in the real live experience untouched by record executives hands.

I've listened to the Made Again live album once on an internet radio show, very quality stuff. Although I couldn't help but feel it was La Gazza Ladra with Hogarth at the helm... A double live album, the first disc containing a few tracks from their 1st, 2nd and 4th album, then the second disc was a live performance of what is often considered their masterpiece. Still a quality performance of Brave, although I feel it is much less of a performance than that on Brave Live 2002.

Guys, what do you think about Afraid Of Sunlight? I used to think it was a really average disc, but lately I'm beggining to enjoy it a lot more.

I've got a couple of Front Row discs from the Brave tour and the energy is a bit better than that of the Paris recording on Made Again. I'd have to say that the Brave Live 2002 could quite possibly be the best recording of Brave that I have.

Joel, Afraid Of Sunlight is so beautiful. Aside from "Cannibal Surf Babe" (which is an alright tune, but a bit out of place), the entire album has such an underlying pain and ache to it. I also believe that it's Hogarth's best performance as a whole. His vocals just really shine on this.

And the title track could be one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. It's just absolute magic. Afraid Of Sunlight is usually right behind Brave and running neck and neck with Marbles as my favorite Marillion discs.

There's something about how Anorak was recorded that makes it as brilliant as it is. Probably have to give it up to Meegan as much as anybody.

're You kidding me? Cannibal Surf Babe totally fits amidst the painfull songs. You see, in a way Cannibal Surf Babe is a very emotional song, too: the singer clearly is out of his mind and has a lot of non-outspoken love on his mind - though he does not know how to cope with it. Musically it wouldn't flow into the next song in a right way so they've fabriqued the French ending (which is just the text, yet then semi-whispered in French by a française if I remember correctly), which is the perfect ending to the song to express it really is an emotional song....A bit of a confusing story of mine, but I think you'll understand me, right?

AoS really is a marvelous album, like Eric stated, Joel, the weakest song, which if it'd been up to me would not have made it onto the album, is by far Beautiful: it just is way too fake an emotion on this track, nice to hear, but a rather poor efford, IMO.
One of the best songs (though they're all great) is Afraid of Sunrise...I prefer this one to the title song, I guess, by just a noselength, but it encorporates the pain of the album just a tadd better than the title song, I think...What do you three think?

Haha, you are absolutely right xD Now I think about Made Again is the La Gazza Ladra of the h-era: both of them are double CD's with on the first CD a compilation of the songs from their 1st, 2nd and 4th album and the second disc being their entire 3rd/concept album; both of the LP's were released after the band left the lable. The only difference is that the first disc of Made Again was a complete show and the first disc of La Gazza Ladra a compilation of songs from three different shows xD

Quite funny

And indeed the Brave Live 2002 is way betterClap

With regard to Afraid of Sunlight, what, to me, makes it even more amazing as a piece of honest and serious work is the fact that the band knew full well that it would be their swansong in the studio with EMI. How many other bands can we think of that would not take the easy road, and basically put out an inferior product simply to fulfill a contractual obligation (and I am especially thinking of Oldfield here with Virgin, as much as I admire him)?

No, they did the hardest thing - they entered the studio and produced a work of such sublime beauty and emotion that it is difficult to put into words - certainly my own review came nowhere near expressing this in the right words.

As Eric said, this album is right up there with the best of the band's works, and I am staggered that it is rated as low as it is on the Archives. As I said in my review, definitely one for those who are prepared to think beyond Fugazi.

Cannibal Surf Babe is also to me a track which is somewhat out of keeping with the rest of the album - good fun, but that is the extent of it. However, every other song is worthy of a five star rating, and I will never ever tire of hearing Out of This World. The absolute epitome of how to write a tribute to a great man in words and music.

I'd have to agree Cannibal Surf Babe is the weakest track on the album; I just feel it doesn't really have a similar melodical emotion to the tracks, which is its only real downfall. I absolutely love Beautiful though! When I was first getting into Marillion, I used to listen to the tracks on Youtube, and that was one of the singles which really stuck with me from the h era. Afraid Of Sunrise is a little boring to me, although it makes a very good transition from Beautiful into Afraid Of Sunlight.

Also, re-listening to Radiation over the past few days, I think its a real gem! Listening to it again right now, I can't really think of why or how people could think this was their weakest LP; I really don't have anything against it at all.

Also, the lyrics and guitar solo in Three Minute Boy might be amongst my favourite from the band.

As you know Joel, absolutely no arguments about Radiation from me at all - I listened to it again a couple of days ago, and it really is such a powerful LP. Easily the most underrated thing they ever did, and I'm sure that a lot of reviewers would change their rating if they went back to it and gave it a new appraisal.

I can't think of it as anything less than 4 stars; it seems to have this nearly electronic experimental edge to it, which I don't think I've heard in full from the band before. Really solid work!
