Absolutely agree, Joel. This band are on such a creative roll at the moment, I think the next one will be incredible. |

Ow, yeah!!!!!! New album coming up and we are excited!
I think the new album will have strong influences from the acoustic Less = More concept, yet it will get more heavy touch to it too: they are likely to want to create a bit of a contrast with L=M, I think, they don't want to keep in the same musical places again. I guess...
Well, maybe that's just what I hope... To let them continue the acoustic stuff mixed with heavier stuff - and, of course, everyting without losing that emotional Marillion-feeling!
What do you guys hope (expect) the next album to be?

I think another more-acoustically based album would be nice, if it was in the same vein of a lot of the playing on This Strange Engine. I really don't know what to expect on the new one yet, although I hope it has the same conceptual touch which Marbles had. I can't think of an album which flows as well as Marbles. I also really hope for Rothery's electric guitar solos to return in full force They were at their peak on Marbles (imo) but they were rather absent on Somewhere Else, HITR and (obviously) L=M. I guess a lighter, poppier touch would be nice as well after the rather heavy-handed and more serious HITR.

Hello Lazland,
Thank you for your kind words and of course I agree. I don't know what you mean by below quote but if you mean adding up the counts for favourite songs from the albums I posted that list on page 25 so please use that one!!
"your contributions will go towards the final tally"
Thx

Great news the boys are starting writing for the new album .
I hope it will be a more quitar oriented album with also some more heavier parts; give Steve some more space please!!

There is a very understandable consensus being reached here, and one I share is the clear need for more of those blistering, emotional, and heavy Rothery solos on the new album. I thought they were very much absent on Somewhere Else, and although I love HITR, he was rather understated on this as well.
However, his work on L=M makes me think that there is a strong body of work to come from him on the new album. Mark Kelly seems to be on a fantastic creative run, and Trewavas on the Transatlantic album is incredible. I think we are in for a good one!! |

As do I!
Although I still haven't been disappointed or underwhelmed by anything from Marillion so far, so I doubt this one will be an exception. |

Did you just use "underwhelmed" and "Marillion" in the same sentence? Oh, wait it is in a good sense (Of course!)

Sorry to blaspheme, chaps, but I remain distinctly underwhelmed by both Holidays in Eden and Anoracknophobia, both of which I would describe as average Marillion albums. However, to redeem myself, I did say average. They simply are incapable of bad |

I think the most interesting part is that they are having a change-of-venue for the writing. They haven't done that since Brave, really. I think h did some writing for Anoraknophobia in the Caribbean, I believe. I think he wrote "Map Of The World" with Nick Van Eede there.
As for the next album, I'd love to see Dave Meegan back in the fold. I think they're riding high with the success of Mike Hunter, but Meegan just gives them an added dimension and he produces quality sound. I still hold firm that Marbles is one of THE best sounding albums I have. Maybe that's unfair to Hunter because he did do a hell of a job with HITR. E |

I definitely agree about Marbles Eric - Easily the best produced album I've ever heard. Simply amazing! If the change of venue means another masterpiece, I'm all for it . Most Marillion albums have had good production in my opinion, although Radiation sounded pretty poor to these ears. From what I've read (particularly in the Marbles journals on the Marillion site) Meegan seemed to take a much more personal approach to the production, which I think may be the difference.

I tell you, fellas, it was so cool to be away for a bit, but to come back and see the thread still going strong. Thanks for carrying the Marillion flame.
I will say that as much as I like Somewhere Else, Hunter really shined for Happiness Is The Road. For that reason alone, it's worth giving him another shot, I suppose. Still, Marbles is tough to match. The production of that disc is easily their best since Brave. So much going on, but not so much that it sounds cluttered and bloated. Just the right amount here and a bit more there. Just perfect. E |

I only just noticed the difference when I watched the video clip on YouTube, and I was really surprised that they didn't use this version for the album - Far superior, although perhaps it doesn't transition into Bitter Suite quite as well. Its pretty rare that I'll find myself saying I prefer a single edit, especially with a prog track, but this one is a definite exception! |

You'
Well I guess that is because you are the old one of the three of us You have probably been waiting for every single Marillion album to be released since Script for a Jester's Tear, haven't you? (Which is something I'd have done too, if I were there at the time!) Well I can't speak for Joel, but I haven't even been waiting for Marbles, since I've been introduced to Marillion in 2004 right after the release of that beauty. My Introduction in 2004, however, wasn't with Marbles, but with Misplaced Childhood, and at first I strongly preferred the Fish-era to the h-era; later I got into h as well. Anyway, that's not the point The point is I have only really been into Marillion from Somwhere Else on and I haven't been really looking forward to the new Marillon album HiE or Anoraknophobia cause I simpy wasn't there as a fan (I just turned 18 at the 3rd of February) I like both of them, though, and that is, maybe, because I got introduced to them gradually, slowly, and had read reviews on them as well, before actually listening to the albums. Now, I say, every single Marillion release (live show, studio album, single, etc.) is entitled to at least three PA stars! I am sorry, but that is just the way it is to me, really I think they are fabulous and can't see their flaws. (Of course I do prefer one thing of their work to the other, but nothing is less than 3 PA stars!) Happiness Is the Road, guys!

Radiation was actually engineered and mixed in my old home town of Oswestry, and I got to go to the studio and meet Phil Beaumont, the studio owner, who had Marillion discs all over the wall. He gave me a sneak preview of the work in progress, I got tickets to see them live at The Walls restaurant unplugged in town (still available as a CD from Racket), and actually got to meet the boys. Probably my only claim to fame, and I am sticking to it jealously. |

Damn good to have you back Eric. We are merely the carriers of the flame. You should regard yourself as its keeper Definitely agree about Hunter - I thought he did a great job on HITR, and deserves another album. Marbles is, to my mind, almost impossible to match - perfect in just about every way, and I really don't think I could ever be so unfair as to expect the band to hit those particular heights ever again - could I? |

[/QUOTE]Hey Basileia, I wear my old scars with great pride As I think I have posted before on the thread, I first got into the band at the time Market Square Heroes was being released, and have followed and loved them ever since. To have a band in that part of the '80s who took their influences from classic prog, wrote interesting songs longer than 3 minutes, and didn't look & sound like the awful new romantic pop of the time was literally heaven to a bloke in his late teens/early twenties as I was back then. Age though isn't important. What I love most about this thread is that I can talk about my musical passion with lads who are not much younger than I was at the time I got into the band. I find that incredibly uplifting and a testament to what a superb band they are. Also, your knowledge and passion are absolutely an inspiration. All we all have to do now is take over the world and rid it of X Factor and other Cowell inspired pap |

I've only been listening to Marillion since the beginning of last year But I've never been so deeply captivated by a band in such a short time. Ever since I first heard Easter I made it my quest to pick up every album I could find by them. Misplaced Childhood was my first |

Thank you, my friend. Good to be back. I went over to another prog site for a bit, but just wasn't the same. Never forget your first, eh? I actually discovered a bunch of great music while I was gone. Any of you guys heard of Big Big Train? That new disc of theirs is an absolute monster. I think Trewavas has been a guest on a disc or two. Absolutely killer stuff. I even went back and got an earlier disc. Not as strong as the new one, but still good. Also got into Karnataka, Panic Room and Touchstone (another great find this year). Actually been a good year for prog. Regarding Marillion: I didn't think they could match the brilliance of Brave, but they came pretty close with Marbles. And Happiness sure has it's moments. "Real Tears For Sale" is one of my favorite Marillion songs. Period. Goes neck and neck with anything off Marbles. My only problem with Marbles is the latter part of The Hard Shoulder with "Older Than Me", "Threw Me Out" and "Especially True". Other than that, the rest is brilliant. E |
