Aloha, Progland!

Hello to all!

My name's Chris and I'm a 42 year old dude from Philadelphia; I've been listening to prog since my first 45 (Roundabout) back in 4th grade. I love all kinds of music including jazz, R&B, grunge, and even some hip-hop, but I always come back to prog when I want that extra bit of melodic complexity.

After trying hard for many years, I realize I just don't like the avante garde very much. I love Coltrane when he was approaching the outside, but not when he actually got 'free'. Likewise, with my tastes in prog, I don't always like the populist choices, nor the extremes. If I've learned anything over the years, it's that music is incredibly subjective.

I tend toward Symphonic prog, the Canterbury sound, and more jazz fusion sounds. Lately, I've been trying to listen to more modern prog such as Arena, Porcupine Tree, and Transatlantic. Some of my faves include (in no particular order): The Yes Album (Yes), Seconds Out (Genesis), The Rotters Club (Hatfield and the North), You (Gong), Crafty Hands (Happy The Man), Space Shanty (Khan), Forse le lucciole non si amano piu (Locanda delle Fate), Erpland (Ozrics), and A Farewell to Kings (Rush).

I've been lurking around these parts for awhile, and I have a lot of you to thank for some discoveries during that time. I look forward to learning more from the community here.

They're a bit avant-garde, although very accessible.

Judging by that list I'd recommend Caravan, Camel, the whole Radio Gnome Quatrology by Gong, Matching Mole, National Health, Spock's Beard, Flash, Gnidrolog and Gentle Giant.

Welcome Chris, I live just outside of Philly and yes i can vouch for the roast pork's awesomeness.

Do check out some more obscure Canterbury like Moving Gelatine Plates if you haven't already.

Might also try dipping your toe into some RIO like Henry Cow's debut or Samla Mammas Manna.

I have Genius Hans and enjoy it quite a bit, as well as Matild and Klossa Kapitatet. I have to be in the right mood to enjoy Samla's whimsy, however. I've approached Leg End a few times and have always found it to be too avant-garde for my liking, but I'm due to give it another spin and see.
