I get that from watching Fred Frith videos on youtube. There is some really good playing, but it is hidden in a sea of IMO pointless noise.

I would disagree with that because Fred Frith is f**king awesome, and I've never heard anything from him that was officially published from him that was bad. But I'm sure he has off nights when the camera isn't running. But I'd be happy to judge a specific video you take issue with.

I just can't take some of his prepared guitar work. Some of it is brilliant, but I just get bored with it sometimes. Maybe my taste has changed since I watched the videos.I'll try to find a good example, but right now I can't find one because I like everything that I look at. LOL

From what I have heard, all the stuff he did with Evelyn Glennie is wonderful.

That was a good performance, too bad the rest of the movie was boring.

Mike, we can talk about Vivaldi if you want. I heard one of his cello concertos on the way to work and it was great.

If you outright don't like free jazz at all you might not want to get it. Unless you're feeling adventurous. Wink

However, if there was an album to change your mind about the genre...this may be it.
Oh shoot, I had completely forgotten about that, I really need to get that. I don't have any of his albums yet, but I was listening to him on Ruckus and Wadada is amazing. Free jazz is possibly the best genre ever. <3

Sleeper, you should listen to Okkyung Lee's album, it's pretty great. Of course, I'm a little biased because I saw her live at The Stone, but it has some incredible free cello. I wish she hadn't given two of the tracks over to Ikue Mori though, I wasn't expecting the album to be so atmospheric. While this type of playing is only a small part of the album, if you like this I think you'll like the whole album.

Yea, Spiritual Dimensions is incredible. Definitely a must-have IMO.

Interesting sample there, I'll definitely have to check out some more of her stuff tomorrow. Thanks for Rec.
But for now I am off to bed, goodnight everyone!

I think everybody has seen that movie. It was suitably depressing, although I watched it a long time ago.

My teacher for Prejudice (my current english unit at school) said its brilliant, but (I'm only 40 minutes in, but) I don't get what's good about it so far. Just a crazy Italian guy.

Just a crazy Italian guy? Oh joel...

It's 4am so I am going to stop wasting my life trying to think of something funnier than to say about that than an exasperated sigh. Goodnight and with any luck I will resist the internet tommorow.

Oh, before I go, today at work one of the managers said we needed to get one of the ten piece cookware sets down to fill a hole and we had this conversation
"OK but I can't help with that."
"Oh, you can just go on the top of the ladder"
"...But I can't lift more than fifteen pounds"
"No, you slide it off." (this was kind of condescendingly, too)
"But I have to lift it at some point in the transaction unless you want me to drop it on him!"

He's just retarded.

I actually liked it, a bit insane, and a bit loud, but overall fun and enjoyable.

I had a hernia! NOBODY PAYS ATTENTION TO ANYTHING I SAY!

I can never get into multigenre music, it always sounds like a series of pastiches to me.

I knew it was because of your hernia. I just wanted to see how you would react when nobody paid attention to what you say. Wink

Multigenre music works okay sometimes, but I agree that it's hard to appreciate. Although it isn't necessarily an easy thing to do.

It's not easy in the sense that writing music is not easy, but I can only get the impression from Mr Bungle that they threw darts to pick which genres to transition to, and then didn't try to innovate anything within those genres because just playing them next to each other is apparently innovative enough. I still like California as a pop album, but I don't think it's prog. Naked City s/t had the same problem, although it was better than Mr Bungle because John Zorn is awesome. I need to listen to some of their other albums before I judge the whole project, but I don't want to buy the huge ass box set, especially when it's probably going to be filled with more disgusting pictures. I love Painkiller musically, but I downloaded their albums from Amazon for that very reason--I do not want a f**king torture picture in my house what the hell is wrong with you John?
