I'm completely with you on the death penalty thing. I'm not 100% opposed to it, but this country hasn't been applying it sparingly and innocent people are being put to death, and that is wrong. When you put an innocent person to death then the guilty one goes free, free to kill again. There is no justice in that. Edited by Slartibartfast - November 10 2009 at 14:36 |

I agree, although that's not an argument against the death penalty as much as it is against the inadequacies of the system itself. Remember, there are innocent people wasting away in a cell for the rest of their lives, and I think that's just as terrible. |

But the big difference is if they are later found innocent, they can let them out. If they are sentanced to death, we all have to live with the mistake. ![]() I would much rather an innocent person 'waste away' than be silenced forever by way of my tax money. True but they can be let out, put an innocent person to death and it's over. But you'll never get a perfect system, so you need to err on the right side whenever possible. Then still evil people will just get out and inflict more evil on innocent others....

Perhaps. This, I think, is one of the reasons it takes a fair bit of time before someone sentenced to die is actually executed. Also, some might prefer death to the beatings, the rapings, and food. ![]() |

Ah, but remember that bit in The Meaning Of LIfe where that guy chose to be put to death by being chased off a cliff by a bunch of cute topless women wearing helmets....

WTF?
Recent Precision-Tuning of the Fruitfly Brain: Scientists at England's University of Oxford know how to make fruitflies scared of things they weren't scared of previously -- by implanting artificial memories in their brains after somehow locating and managing the precise 12 neurons that enable the flies to learn things. The implanted "danger" (the smell of sweat-soaked athletic shoes) causes the flies to scatter at the first whiff. Hey, I like that. All you have to do now catch all mosquitos, implant false memories in them and you'll never get a mosquito bite again.

Terrible... But in my country of origin, due to terrible governments and dry weather in the dam areas, they're suffering daily blackouts in selected areas of the major cities... 6-8 hours a day...
Thanks to "21 century socialism"....

I agree, I think that I would prefer to die then sit in a cell for the rest of my life, innocent or not. I can't imagine what it would be like to have the rest of your life to regret one bad decision. |

In this case I think it is beyond a shadow of a doubt. I think there should be a provision in the law to cover this. I got hauuled into the station once because I looked like someone who the cops were looking for. I didn`t have my wallet with me and my girlfriend had to come with my wallet so I could prove to them who I was. Sometimes the cops make mistakes they don`t want to admit and innocent people get the shaft.
This guy deserves to rot in a gulag but that means spending taxpayers money. Best to just get rid of him. |
