Before I begin, apologies if this has been done before, but I searched for it and nothing came up. I am not scrolling through 178 pages of topics to find a similar threads.

Dream Theater comprises some of the most technically gifted musicians of all time. I personally consider Mike Portnoy to be one of music's all-time great drummers. Just listen to the last three minutes of Fatal Tragedy and I think you'll see where I'm going.

So, your appreciation please for the mighty Dream Theater! Clap

I came on pretty late with Dream Theater. I resisted the whole prog metal thing for a while, and even though it's still not my favorite subgenre, I've really come to appreciate the band. Recently I've come to the conclusion that Portnoy could probably be the best rock drummer that I've ever heard (even though Porcaro is my favorite and [in my mind] could be the best). Some of his hi-hat patterns are truly amazing.

I also think Black Clouds & Silver Linings is their best release since 6DoIT.

DT is one of my favorite bands ever!!! Scenes From A Memory is my favorite, but Black Clouds is worthy of a 5 as well.

yes, DT have been discussed on this forum before...LOL

actually i like them very much, their latest album is growing on me pretty well, a very listenable album. I  have albums  from "Metropolis.." onwards, the only observation is that they always remind me of Iron Maiden - an observation not a criticism, as i love IM.

I was DT at Wembley last year and they put in a fine show, as i have said before considering the acoustics in this converted swimming pool the band sounded stunning. Clap

I wonder what is it that you searched, that no result came. Ermm I just searched: a 13-page list of DT-related topics. Sure, not all of them are "overall appreciation threads", still, if you put the pieces together...

and I hate DT

Dream Theater has covered some tracks I really like.  What is DT's best or most creative cover?

I find it hard to believe that out of the millions of DT threads that have cluttered up the archives for all these years, there isn't a single straightforward appreciation thread... Oh well, it can't be helped I suppose.

And I like only one DT song, and that would be Voices. It seems that they still haven't got over the whole "LOOK AT ME!" phase yet (which someone mentioned earlier), and that's what repulses me from most of their tracks.

Dream Theater has some incredibly talented musicians which you are never sure if they're going to just show-off seperately or together as a whole band.

Falling Into Infnity being my favorite album by them definitely shows what I like(or even love) about them: well-thought compositions, not-as-metal-as-they-can-be, a great balance between each member, James LaBrie's best vocals(IMO) and pretty varied in style.

Of course I don't like everything ... I guess it's safe to say that there are many albums that I'd hate having to listen to. Klaus Schulze doesn't exactly fall into that category, although some of his albums would probably have a sleep inducing effect on me.Wink

Love Dream Theater. They really opened up so many prog floodgates for me. They're the single most fan-friendly band of all time as far as releases and special goings-on. They're also one of the most talented groups ever, as each member (except present-day James LaBrie) is technically competent enough to play almost anything presented him.

It's been a long time since they've released something that does themselves justice. Nonetheless, I think you really can't deny that Dream Theater is one of the most important and influential prog bands of the newer era.

Dream Theater is awesome. From Scenes From A memory, to Black Clouds, to Octavarium they never seem to disapiont. Mike Portnoy and Jordan Rudess are one of the best at what they play. When you finally start listening its become to late...

Love them.  I think now that they're getting better known suddenly they're becoming hated on several of the boards I go on (apparently they only play technical w**k Confused).  Strange because when I first got into them most of the people who new of them loved them.

Anyawy, for me, they were the band that got me into prog in the first place
