^^I don't own this, Joel. A 6 minute of "Heart Of Lothian" though. Sounds interesting.

I'm not a singles guy. I have the 3 singles after Somewhere Else was released and a copy of "Alone In The Lap Of Luxury" with some live stuff ("Cover My Eyes/Slainte Mhath") that I found at Amoeba's in San Francisco 4 years ago.

Did you ever watch the Brave Live DVD?

^^I did - Never been so thoroughly amazed by a DVD in my life, to be completely honest... I think it was partially because they were playing BRAVE, but still, I think I like the performance better than Somewhere In London...

Its amazing to see it played live!

I love the fact that they re-created the performance per the Brave tour.

What I really notice from this particular performance is how it increases in intensity...particularly Hogarth. His vocals start off a bit tentative on "Bridge/Living With The Big Lie", but get much stronger as the performance progresses. One of the best performances of "The Great Escape" that I've ever heard, too.

Reading the current edition of Classic Rock Presents Prog and in it Fish says that if they ("they" being Fish-era Marillion) had been allowed 12 months break after the Clutching At Straws tour, he'd probably still be in the band. I think that his departure, with the benefit of hindsight, was inevitable, if not then, then certainly within a couple of years. What do you guys think?

Tony, just by what I read in the biography Separated Out, it seemed the candle was burning at both ends between Fish and the rest of the band. It states at least one instance where Rothery and Fish got into a huge argument to the point that Fish had thrown Steve up against the wall.

The rest were wanting a different direction, and no amount of time could've swayed those feelings.

Yes, I think the fact is that no length of break would have prevented a split. In addition to the points raised, egos were, of course, very bloated, because a lot of people forget just how huge commercially they had become. Fish was not an obscure prog singer, but a massive personality who was also turning his attention to acting.

My own opinion, of course, is that things made a turn for the better after he leftLOL

I will add that I believe Marillion were really on the verge of being a global phenomenon. Misplaced introduced them to the MTV age, and Clutching broke new barriers. I also think that it would've burned out a couple of years later.

With Hogarth, however, I think they found somebody with whom they were on the same page and the same vision. Maybe they didn't achieve the global success that they could have, but I do think they lasted much longer with h than they ever could with Fish. And their music still sounds fresh and relevant. Even further, the new music ventures off and explores new ideas. More so than if Fish were still with the band.

Just my opinion, though.

I think the band would've eventually broken away from FISH, and in all honesty, I'm quite glad they did...

Some of my all time favourite songs are from FISH with Marillion, but, more of my all time favourite songs are products of H with Marillion.

Its sad that they broke up - But I wouldn'tve have it any other way.

The booklets of the remastered double CD editions of the Fish-era albums are a very good read about Marillion's struggle before and after Fish's departure...

I still think it's a tragedy, even though there is a lot of material of the H era that I do enjoy. Fish-era Marillion was not just good, it was pure magic.

Those who promise us paradise on earth never produced anything but a hell.

I don't like Hogarth- era Marillion at all. To be honest Fish was Marillion for me. He was the major talent in the band the rest, by Prog's standards, were merely good. I prefer Fish's admittedly inconsistent solo output to anything that Marillion put out after his departure.
Fish is one of the few rock performers I feel any kind of allegiance to and I will always go out and support his tours - even if he was less than complementary about Bolton in that recent Classic Rock article!

I think I must be one of the few who was a Marillion and a Europeans fan in the early 80s, my interest in Marillion was waning after Misplaced and I was not immediately impressed with Clutching, if Fish had stayed I honestly don't know if I would have bought the next album or not.

So I was genuinely excited to hear that Hogarth had been selected to replace Fish and that moral-dilema never arose - I bought Seasons on the day of release and loved it and I still rate it highly (Easter is my all time favourite Marillion song of either "era").

Marillion have added two masterpiece albums to my collection - Script and Brave - I'm happier for that.

In addition to that Dean, I'm sure that you remember the appearance by Fish on an old BBC2 programme rating his favourite albums of all time, in which he pulled out....The Europeans!!

the opening section of 'fantastic place' live is just magic to me.  Especially the moment when the drums kick in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EcDRYTwmE8

Hi JW, and welcome to the forum and this great thread.

The whole track is simply amazing, and still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Quite where Rothery found that solo from is beyond me.

I agree - definitely makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up too.  And i have always thought that while there are many more extravagant, technical guitarist, Rothery's tone is among the most epic around.

Funny you guys mention the hairs standing up on this song because that happened a couple of weeks ago when it was on the iPod while out running. The part where Rothers tears into the solo while h sings, "...behind your tire, troubled eyes."

Really hoping they did that song at the convention...and they came through. Absolutely brilliant when experienced live.

^Indeed it is a great song - The live videos stand testament to that!

Also, I had an error ordering ANORAK IN THE UK ...
It didn't place my order, as the RBS WORLDPAY service was down, although it did refund me with the click of a button...

Still annoying, I'll probably try buying again in the next couple of days.

^^

Emailed Racket, and they allowed me to email them the details and set up the orders themselves to my account to eliminate the chance of another error

Great service - You guys were right!

Thanks
