Oh well, now I've gone and done it.

This is my first serious post on the thread for quite some time, but friends will remember that I was giving Adam & Eve a go to see if I should add to that and Stardust We Are & Unfold The Future. I love it. It's a great LP, and I am a definite fan.

So....I've now gone and blown all of my spare money on the ENTIRE TFK collection...Yes, all of them!!!!

It will take quite a few weeks, but I will report back in periodical intervals with how I am getting on with them. I can't wait to start listeningBig smileBig smileBig smileBig smile

*stands up and applauds* heh, and welcome to the club.  The Flower Kings are on a very elite plateau in my minds.  They sit happily alongside Genesis as my two favorite bands of all time.  I'm sure that we'll all be eager to hear your thoughts as your listening experience continues.

With Stardust and Unfold you have two of the more popular ones from this thread, though Adam and Eve is one of the more polarizing CD's.  If you love all three of them, the remainder of the catalog should be a thrill for you to explore.

Ironically, the last one that I finally received was "Unfold the Future" for Christmas last year.  I'm still exploring the catalog and finding new treasures with each listen and I still don't know all of their songs by name.  I believe that you'll get a lot of listening pleasure for some time to come with your investment.  Enjoy.

And for the record, what a fabulous way to start out page forty.

Cheers all. New listening experiences are always great aren't they? As I type this, the MP3 player is busy.

I will get round to proper reviews in the next few weeks, time permitting, and, of course, once I have had a chance to assimilate all the music. However, at the moment, I would give Stardust a 4.5 rating, Unfold 4 stars, and, probably, dam & Eve a similar rating.

Barney - in view of the delay, can you send the girls round to the local pub rather than home?WinkLOL

Posting to say that I just listened to Space Revolver for the first time, and it's made a believer out of me. My only prior experience with them was a couple years ago, before I was really into prog and I checked out Adam and Eve on a whim, not caring for it at all. I was somewhat relieved to see that it wasn't one of their higher rated albums.

I came back to them today, because I figured there had to be something to them if they have an active 40-page thread! So, because of their large discography, I scanned the first few pages and picked out what looked to be a good starting point (Space Revolver). I was going to go with Stardust We Are, but I figured that a single album would be a much less daunting listen (it's next, though!).

Cheers.

This is great news Smile

I'm really pleased that you've picked up on the enthusiasm for the band in this thread and have been open minded enough to give them another chance.

You've got so many great albums to discover and  "Space Revolver" is indeed a good starting point. It was my introduction to the band and is still my favourite.

Happy listening.......

Nov

The Road Back Home is awaiting me for the ride home, and probably the ride to and from work tomorrow, and the ride up north on Saturday and....  Well, that's what happens when you have a short commute and a double CD.

I've had Stardust and Flower Power in the car for the past week, still love them after 10 years of listening (can't believe it's been that long!).

Actually, I was fortunate to have a PM exchange with sinkadotentree, who has sent me 12 (!) of his 3 star albums.  Just sent them to me, for free.  What an excellent human being.  Anyway, I picked 8, and he randomly chose the rest.  Have listened to a few of them now, like the Beardfish (Sane Day, I have the two Sleeping in Traffic albums and like them a lot).  Also love the Maneige album, Les Porches (a french Canadian band from the mid 70's......folk prog).  Satellite's first album did nothing for me, and honestly seemed very cheesy to me.....but to be fair, I'll have to give it more listens (first impressions don't always hold you know).  Phideux's Doomsday Afternoon had a similar impression, though I like it a bit better.  Again, will give it more time.   That's as far as I've gotten so far, but I'm just thrilled to have new stuff to listen to as I've been too broke to buy anything for a few months now.  I did scrape money together to preorder Tomas Bodin's solo album (of course :-) and to get The Opium Cartel album.

Right - I had to use an MP3 editing tool to merge the parts of the Garden of dreams into 1 seamless track and then cut out the daft bit of "I am the sun part one" - I should be able to listen to all the epics till I have my order of preference sorted -Cant see Monsters & Men or Stardyst we are being shifted from one and two in either order because they both can be used as the paradigm for symphonic prog rock perfection.

Kind of echoing what Nov said, but thank you for the post.  Most of the time it's just us rambling along about whatever.  It's very gratifying to hear that we're helping to bring new listeners in to a group that mean so much to us.  Glad you gave the Flower Kings another chance and welcome to the group :)

Hope everybody has had a great weekend.

I don't think we've talked about this before.  What about TFK's short tracks?  And by short I mean five minutes or less.  Not usually the first thing you'd think of with TFK.

A few I love are:-

1.  The Man Who Walked With Kings.  A totally awesome instrumental and one of my all-time TFK faves.
2.  Monkey Business.  Catchy, infectious and a bit wacky, but scratch below the surface and what a song.  This just sums up what I love about TFK.
3.  Cosmic Circus and Babylon.  I personally view these as a song of two parts, but hell they're three minutes or so each.  CC is just typically happy TFK, I love it.  Babylon is a simply gorgeous piece of music and one of Tomas Bodin's finest moments.
4.  Red Alert. How has so much superb music ever been fitted into 1:13?  This should have been 10:00 plus!!
5.  Chicken Farmer Song.  See the comments on 2 above.  This is even better though.  Below the surface of the happy lazy summers afternoon refrain lies an instrumental break of symphonic prog perfection.

That'll do for starters.

Hmm, Flower Kings songs under five minutes, my favorites . . .

For startrs, I'm not including any of the parts of "Garden of Dreams", most of the individual pieces are below five minutes but as they're part of a grander scheme of things, I'm thinking they don't count.

I'm starting with the absolutely hysterical "IKEA by Night" (Y'all should have seen that coming).
I've always enjoyed "You Don't KNow What You've Got" off of Space Revolver.
"Poor Mr. Rain's Ordinary Guitar" from Stardust is another of my favorites.
"Mommy Leave the Light On" is a good tune as well.
Finally, the polarizing "Hudson River Sirens Call 1998" is one of the songs that I really like off the second CD of Flower Power.  It's bizarre, odd but neat in an uncomfortable sort of way.

The song that actually grabbed me the most off of Stardust We Are was one of their shorter songs, "Ghost of the Red Cloud". It's got a great kinda reggae-ish groove to it and a cool electric piano sound.

I just finished my liste to The Road Back Home yesterday, and that has many of their under 5 minute tracks on there.  Unfortunately, I really can't create a list at this point of either favorite epics or favorite short tracks.  I don't have enough of a grasp on their discography to be able to do that yet.
