I can assure you: When it comes to Guy Manning, I am like a cat permanent stationed next to a mouse hole, ready to pounce. I rate him very highly. Btw. Four albums is being re-released this summer in addition to a new album: These are: All of them are excellent. Hot news: Guy Manning has now left The Tangent by mutual agreement. But he will still co-operate with Andy on other projects. The reason is lack of time due to the recent surges in activities of both Manning and The Tangent.

Prog Sphere recently completed an interview with Guy Manning of...
well, Manning! He was fresh off of a recent appearance with his band at
the Rites of Spring Festival in Gettysburg, USA, so in retrospect it
would have been a good idea for us to ask him how it went. Not to worry
though, there's plenty more spoken of in here, such as his album's
concepts, some of the stories he's written about, curry, and cats!
Please enjoy.
The interview is HERE. |

Very good interview. I recently found your discography and I´m amazed by the fact you mentioned Al Stewart. When I was first reviewing Songs... I was about to mention that I had the same feeling when I heard Year Of The Cat or Modern Times: the same zeal for the lyrics, melody, arrangement, everything. Even the cover art (an important item too, even if nowadays people don´t give it much atention) . Almost too good to be true, in fact. I am glad someone still cares for all the details and releases something of that high caliber.
Best regards Tarcísio |

I'm on the case and am already working on my two pro-head mates to help them discover Guy's music. Since receiving Number 10 I can't stop playing it and am hoping to pass my enthusiasm on to them. |

For those of us who appreciate Guy Mannings music and want to push it: Please take 10-15 minutes of your life by going to a music forum of your choice and spread the word by starting a thread/debate or join in a prog rock thread. Please push his free compilation album so the people themselves can download and make up their own minds. Free legal downloads are a good thing. I have done this in several forums. Several DJs has been gently lobbyed too. Guy's marketing budget is minus zero pounds and I think we all owe him some favours. We are friendly people after all. |

Guy
sadly I couldn't make it to your recent Peel gig - any plans to play there again? If not, how about the Riga Club?

Tangent / Beardfish?
I honestly do not know. Andy Tillison makes all the Tangent decisions so you'd need to ask him (sorry).

Guy, we talked a little bit over on the Magenta forum. Keep up the good work. I am surprised no one jumped in already and asked if you can confirm if the Tangent/Beardfish colab is off for good or just on hold. Thanks

Firstly , thanks for the great music! I have all the albums and love them
![]() Thanks very much for the support
1. Are there any plans for you and Andy (Tillison) to do more LA VOCE DEL VENTO compositions?
No plans at present, but one day we hope to do a whole album!
2. Anybody you'd like to work with? Anybody you'd like to meet?
There are so many - Peter Gabriel I think would be a 'good match'! Kate Bush, Roy Harper, Ian Anderson,.any of my heroes I guess 3. Do you think that the fact that you've done ten albums (which is far more than most artists achieve) has its ups and downs? I read that you still feel 'unknown' and so the fact that so many albums have been released and to mainly great reviews must make you slightly disappointed in this respect? If it take your meaning rightly...Yes I think sometimes, if you release alot of albums then the NEXT one becomes just one more; you are not viewed as 'special because of that regularity.
I think that ALL my albums hold their heads up well adn so it is NOT a lack of quality in the songwriting. Alot of people are just looking for the next new thing, I pass right under their noses because they have not bothered to listen before (why should they?) or they assume they know what my music is about/sounds like....and they think there is no urgency to do so, because I have ALWAYS been there! But I won't always be! 4. Do you miss the LP sleeve? Bigger for the artwork, more room for the lyrics etc.
YES YES YES . I loved to hold it read the lyrics study the artwork and it was at a size where this was excellent. Now I need my glasses and a magnifying glass!
5. What are your views on downloading music?
Aha a tricky one! I take it you mean illegally?
Depends on which 'head' you are asking I think!
:Legal downloads are a useful alternative to buying a CD but see points a) and b) below
Illegal??
The ARTIST in me says...I want as many people to hear my music so thats the way of the World, let it out there The other practical side of me says yeah, but if nobody buys any CDs
a) No artwork is seen which is a real shame with my albums in particular b) no lyrics are read..another no no from me there as they are Soooooo important!!! c) I get no money back in coffers towards making any more (SMALL ARTISTS artists DO NOT GET LOT OF ADVANCES or ROYALTIES you know!) Great to be able to ask you stuff, thanks!

Very nice interviews, guys. Thank you ! It was very interesting to read.
![]() Sounded a little bit like the ones I do.
Guy Manning summed up the situation of independant (progrock) musicians very well but I still wonder how he can be so prolific. He probably creates very easily in his mind and has the talent to play all those instruments correctly, which helps a lot.
