Topic: "Voices": Best DT all around song? Posted: August 12 2009 at 23:03 |
"Voices" from dream theaterīs "awake"has it all (excelent and dark lyrics, incredibly intense vocals, virtuosic playing, drama, heavyness, beautiful melody, variated dinamics). I was listening to it again and i thought: what a masterpiece!!! Evne more than octavarium, a change of seasons, etc, etc, etc.
Is there anyone who agree with me?
Which song could be stronger if that would be possible?

WARNING: Your caps lock key is depressed.
Hmm, plenty of better songs by DT though, it just comes down to taste.

Not my favorite DT song, but as ACYL said, it's a matter of tastes anyway.

This.
Mine would easily be "Space Dye Vest", but only because I don't like much metal and I love piano...

"Voices" is a fantastic song. It is, of course, a matter of taste, but your points are all valid and I would definitely rank it among the best, especially in the under-10-minutes-long category.

Never was too much of a fan of it even as a DT fan, though I can see why people would.
What sets it aside from the other classics, like for example, Octavarium, ACOS, Metropolis, is it's simplicity. While the others often relied on rapid melodic runs and band members playing off each other, Voices follows more of a standard band format, with all the instruments playing together to build the emotions with simpler chords, rather than intense runs. Of course, standard hard rock songs don't really sound like that a lot of the time, especially in terms of dynamics.

Seconded. And Octavarium is slightly better I feel looking at DT's discography same as the multi tracked Six Degrees. Voices would be no.3 for me.

Yeah, I would agree. Voices is their best song. The lyrics are incredibly powerful and very dark, lots of shifts in mood and feeling, the song itself is incredibly well constructed and is very tight, the guitar solo seems natural rather than arbitrary, also it must be one of Petrucci's best solos, it fits the mood of the song perfectly and is extremely effective.
I wouldn't say that it's a simple DT song from a compositional standpoint. From an instrumental technicality standpoint, sure, but in my books that isn't a huge negative.

I can think of tons of DT songs I like more. Octavarium, Six Degrees, The Count of Tuscany, Learning to Live, etc.
Good song, but it isn't DT's best song by far

Like everyone said, it's just a matter of taste.
As far as my taste goes, I would take either Learning to Live, Take The Time, Pull Me Under, Metropolis Part 1, Lines in the Sand, New Millenium, Hell's Kitchen, A Change of Seasons or Trial of Tears over Voices.

Hmm, no.... Seriously, I can listen to bits from SFaM, Octavarium and SDoIT, but just few songs which some I find okay rock songs(Blind Faith, Root of all Evil, These Walls), while others that feature very good musicianship, but not very original IMO (Octavarium)

Highly emotional song. Both JLB and JP are superb on this track and on top of that it's on my favourite album by them

I like DT a lot, but I don't really have the song Voices in my mind, never really liked it very much. My very favourite ones would be between Stream of Consiousness, Octavarium, The Mirror, Space dye Vest, and In the Presence of Enemies 1. I might also include Waiting for Sleep with Learning to Live, Home, and Finally Free. Ofcourse, I love many other songs from DT.
