Shameless appreciation for Saga!

Not everyone's cup of tea, for sure, but this Canadian blend of Queen and Rush is just my bag, and I've been deeply in love with a lot of their albums over the last couple of weeks. I also noticed that they've been moved (appropriately) to Xover! World's Apart is such a great Xover masterpiece.

Do they really sound like 'a blend of Queen and Rush' ? The first time I read something about this band, the magazine said they were doing a fusion of folk and funk (if I remember well, it was "Hard-Rock Magazine" talking about... 'medieval funk'!)

I rate it 8.8 out of 10 on the progfreak site.  Which would probably translate into a high 3 or low 4 here on PA if I were to give it a review.

I would say that the Queen and Rush reference is pretty good.  Probably more Queen than Rush.  Both their guitarist and drummer are quite good rock artists, but they are also very much a keyboard oriented band.

Saga aren't the kind of band that are going to appeal to fans of avant prog or technical metal and probably not jazz fusion.  I think their appeal lies with bands like the aforementioned Rush and Queen, Marillion, Asia, dare I say later period Yes, and neo-prog era Genesis.  I guess that I would also say that either Crossover or Neoprog would both be legitimate genres for categorizing them.

gak, I was terribly dissapointed with this one, it was the first I'd bought since the debut after a long hiatus from prog, and got it assuming it would be on a par with their first... it isn't

so Mike which should be my next Saga purchase ?

I'm currently listening to Contact: Live In Munich, which is the farewell show of singer Michael Sadler.  Currently, listening to 10,000 Days, which was the title track of their last album with Sadler.  This songs is just so beautiful with some gorgeous piano work.

I'm a big Saga fan going way back to 1982 when I was discovering music and quickly getting oriented toward prog.  Saga's World's Apart came out and I was hooked.  I heard Asia's Asia before that and discovered Yes via 90125 shortly thereafter.
