Ah f**king hell... Angry I'd written a long story about hearing USA before Larks' Tongues in Aspic and how the studio songs still feel pretty lame compared to their live counterparts still all these years later, but then I managed to erase the whole thing. But yeah, now that I'll probably end up buying Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair pretty soon, I fear that the same thing might happen with Absent Lovers and those albums, if AL is so much better as I remember you saying.

Surprisingly I much enjoyed the AL versions of Red and Larks II with the electronic drums and all Smile

I've got a soft spot especially for the USA version of Exiles. The original is good too in it's delicacy, but the heavier, more flowing feel of the live version works so much better with me.

Well, not in the conventional/musical sense, I think. The Doors were essentially a roots rock/pop rock/blues rock (at different times) band which brought in half a million psychedelic elements but still kept very much in touch with the visceral essence of rock. I hadn't really thought of them as self-indulgent, for some reason, combining alcohol/drugs with rock music isn't self-indulgent LOL, and The Doors aren't often particularly obtuse or difficult to understand.
