Squirrels do seem to be one of those creatures which divide opinions - not being a hugely avid gardener, I love having the little sods running around & confusing our cats, but having said that I do understand those who suffer damage from them having a less than high opinion.
$460 dollar fine for feeding one? That's over the top, though... does the park in question have a serious infestation of them?
Mind you - they're just so cute:
Took me a while to get this shot, but worth it I think; how can you tell me this is a photograph of vermin, eh?
Ook at dose cute ickle paws!

Hmmm I put seeds in two days ago and now there's something growing already. Surely it's too soon?
Maybe something else was in the soil... I'll see how it progresses.
The thing is, the stalk and petals are in the right place. There's other stalks too and they also seem in the right place.

Squirrels are a pain when you have a veggie garden, as my father-in-law does - but he simply traps the little buggers and transplants them elsewhere (but I've told him not my yard ). Deer used to be a problem as well, until he got a sufficiently high fence.

False alarm. They're weeds growing in my pot.

There's plenty of squirrels here (the grey variety), and, while I can understand the damage they can do to a garden, they are so very cute. Anyway, birds can do some damage as well - I remember that blackbirds used to rummage in the pots on our balcony in Rome, and eat the leaves of our miniature roses, much to my mom's dismay.

Raff's been Americanised already, I see. By the way, I've put in add requests for yourself and Micky on MySpace.

Squir'ls are okay - the only thing I have against the greys is they drove out the indigenous reds... and they do serious damage to my bird-feeders.
On a somewhat ironic note the greys themselves are now under threat from black squir'ls, a mutant form of the greys that are stronger, meaner and with a higher sex drive. Looks like the Goth gene is dominant.

Hmm. Those red squirrels are a bit cuter. We've got pretty much all grey over here, though I have seen a black squirrel once or twice.

There's also albino ones. Now that's a good photo!

squirrels are very cute, better than the raccoons and skunks that roam our neighborhood, I don't mind them but they get into everything and scare the cats!

When people get lost in thought it's often because it's unfamiliar territory.

We had an albino in our garden for one summer, but never saw it again (I guess they stand out to predators a bit too much)

No - that was taken in St.John's Newfoundland a couple of years back & a bugger of a shot it was to get, too; every time I went to hit the shutter, the little sod moved - took about 15 minutes to eventually get it.

Only ever seen a couple of black squirrels, but they are evidently encroaching into north Hertfordshire, so I expect we'll be seeing more of them soon.

I planted 5 sunflower seeds yesterday and full watered them. Do you think they will need watering again today?
The last time I tried to grow some a few years ago and they did start to grow but they got eaten by slugs.
Any tips?

I'm not certain how much truth there is in this but I heard a copper ring is all you need. Apparently slugs won't go anywhere near copper.

There's no answer to that
Aaaaanyway...
Us Shedders have lost one of the great pantheon of uber-greys - the doyen of Radio 4's 'just a minute' (not to mention 1970s dog food commercials) died yesterday:
A man for whom the words 'laid back' could have been coined.

Haha you guys and squirrels. I'm showing my redneck livings prior to moving to London, but one time my dad got so annoyed at the squirrels destroying our bird feeder that he got the shotgun and went after them. And then gave my brother and I permission to kill any with our air rifles. Just squirrels though. That deterred them pretty quick, when we were around at least.

When it comes to vermin we don't really seee too many squirrels, however, rats are a different thing altogether and my god some of them are fekkin huge!
I bought my father a .22 rifle last Xmas as he has a fairly large plot of land and several sheds (yes, several sheds Jim!! ) and the buggers like to build their homes underneath.
He tells me its the best present I've ever bought him!

Our cats keep the rats at bay - they go after the squir'ls aswell, but in 6 years they've only caught one.
