^That would definitely be a good way to describe it. I'd give it 3 stars to be honest, there are some very good parts to it, but plenty that just doesnt sit well with me as well.
Got Controle Denied's album The Art of Existence yesterday, fantastic, I like it more than the Death album I have (Sound of Perserverance).

IMO, Death - Sound of Perserverance is awesome stuf man, superb music, my death favourite album. you should give it more listens, Scavenger of human sorrow, to forgive is to sufer, spirit crusher ..

Sound of Perserverance is not my favorite either. Chuck´s vocals are way too processed and sound strange to my ears. The music doesn´t flow as well as it did on the three previous albums either. I remember that it was a great disappointment when it was released ( at least to me). I still don´t enjoy it much and seldom listen to it.

Its not that I dont like SOP, because I do, its just that I've heard similar types of music done better (particularly Cynic). Not a fan of Chucks voice, though. High and raspy growls dont work for me at all.

So I've been listening to Traced in Air almost nonstop since I got it, and I think it's incredible! Should I get Focus? I've heard that the two really aren't all that similar, but I've heard that "Focus" is such an incredible landmark album. Plus, then I can have their entire studio discography!

Cynic is a fantastic band. I´ve followed them since Focus was released. I can´t count the number of times I´ve listened to that album and it´s still after 15 years one of my favorite albums. I´m still working on getting into Traced In Air, but so far it also sounds unique and excellent. A review of that one will probably follow in the not so distant future  .

Yeah, remember I live in Arizona. And although it may be symmetrical, it doesn't make for good tour oppurtunities. Even when bands come through Phoenix, I live about 4 hours away.
DT and Zappa better come through here this summer though...

Heh, not much better in Melbourne, well in terms of international bands anyway. If I want to see Australia bands/local bands, that's no problem since I live in the suburbs of the second biggest city in the country and I can just take a train or 2 and be there easy, but some bands (international) tend to either not come here as often or just skip Australia entirely because of the distance:( I was lucky to catch Dream Theater on their first ever tour here 12 months ago. Doubt they will ever come back despite what they said at the gig.

I´ve read many interviews with bands who state that it´s simply too expensive to tour Australia. We´re not as badly hurt in Denmark but the metal scene is so incredibly small that some bands skip us too. One of my favorites Nevermore has only been in Denmark once as opening act for Disturbed. Never as a headliner. They´ve been to our neighbour countries Sweden and Germany countless times. A couple of years ago some of my friends went to see them in Malmö, Sweden. I can´t quite remember why I didn´t go but maybe it was during the birth of my first of second child . In fact that might be the case. When my daughter was born I missed G3 ( Satriani, Vai and Fripp) who played the same night.

I'm not even sure Nevermore has been to Australia, ever. They are definitely one of my favorite metal bands ever. And yep, some bands have come out from Australian tours at a financial loss, which really puts many bands except the biggest bands off from coming here to tour. Fortunately there is a few really amazing metal bands around Australia that tour regularly, so at least we have some sort of metal scene, if not particularly big. I saw G3 on their first (and so far, only) tour in December 2006. Vai, Satch and Petrucci. Blew my mind, amazing gig. And it's not too off topic either, since Petrucci's album is in the Archives anyway

Do you know if tons of bands come through Norway or Sweden? I know they've got a great scene where the music comes from, but just wondering if bands frequent cities there. I'm considering going there as an exchange student and I'll be 18 by the time I get there, so I'm hoping if I ever go I'll have some great oppurtunities to see some music I otherwise wouldn't see.

^One would only hope lots of bands come through Sweden.....it is, after all, the birthplace of an entire death metal genre, melodic death.
And well, Norway is basically THE place for Black Metal, so it would be kinda weird if metal bands didn't frequently tour there.
Scandinavia is a metal hot spot in general.

^Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'd really like to go there for that reason alone. However, I know there's much more to Scandinavia than metal. Now I have to come up with some other excuses to go there.
