Deathspell Omega is a Technical Avant-Garde Black Metal band from France. They are one of the best known bands in the Norma Evangelium Diaboli movement among brethren including Watain, Antaeus, and Funeral Mist. The identities and locations of the band members are currently unknown. Furthermore they have never played any concerts and no pictures exist of the band. It should also be known that Deathspell Omega has no official Myspace page, does not intend to have one, and is not in touch with the people who opened the currently existing and absolutely unauthorized pages. Their early records, EP's, splits, and demo were raw and simplistic black metal in the vein of Darkthrone, early Immortal, etc. Since then, their music has greatly progressed to include highly technical, experimental, and even some ambient/post elements into the mixture. They have also adapted to a cleaner and better produced aesthetic.

Though the band members identities are unknown, they have given a small amount of interviews on their beliefs and such. Their lyrical content deals primarily with the concepts of religion on a metaphysical level and more specifically Satan, God, and their relationships with man in everyday life. They are often praised for being lyrically more thorough and 'advanced' than most other black metal bands.

Their two full length releases: Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice (Latin for If you seek His monument, look around you), and Fas - Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum (Latin for Divine law - Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire) are the first two serials in a conceptual trilogy. Though the two albums are linked by concept, they are both musically unique. The trilogy proclaims the relationships of God, Satan, and man. The first installment 'Circumspice was focused on the concept of Satan, Fas' was conceptually based around man, and the third yet unreleased installment will theoretically be based around God. Because of their religious groundings in their lyrics, they are often referred to as 'Orthodox', 'Religious', or 'Christian Black Metal'.

Well in reading the lyrics it seems to talk about both God and Satan... so it could be about either? I think it's about Satan though. It's a perversion on Christianity, you see... so they hold Satan to a god-like status. I think when he's referring to his god throughout the album, he's actually speaking of Satan.

They should be added over the next 24-48 hours I guess (yeah I know, takes ages:P but since I'm only a 4 star Collaborator, I technically don't have enough clearance to add a band to the database, I have to pass the bio along to a Special Collaborator to get it added).

And since it's on my side of the alphabet, I'm taking it to the SC, not you Planky Tongue

But you get Gigan anyway.

It's probably my first post on this thread and since I know s*it about this subgenre I would like to have some recomendations. I was looking for jazz-metal bands or progressive doom metal if that exists.

Coltrane with growling vocals maybe?

Try:
Bohren & Der Club Of Gore- Sunset Mission (or anything)- straight up doom jazz stuff.

also:
Peter Brotzmann Octet- Machine Gun- crazed free jazz....

The Esoteric- The Maniacal Vale (psychedelic, progressive doom metal)

those should keep you busy. Otherwise GO BACK THROUGH THE THREAD for more recommendations. I know I left a rather large list earlier on...

Oh and I notice you're into ELP. If you like keyboard oriented stuff then check out Arcturus. They're not fully keyboards but it's definitely the main instrument of the band and they farkin rule soooooooo....

Be patient mang, I've finished making the final edits to the bio (since in the form you gave it to me, it had to be edited slightly, but it's basically still as you wrote it), now waiting on a Special Collab to add them:)

I would not necessarily call Deathspell Omega Christian per se, they merely research and utilize various Christian ideals and texts to get their rather Satanic message across. Orthodox Black Metal to me merely stresses an obsessive allusion to detailed christian ethos, but (does not necessarily worship or condone)not necessarily christianity. Perhaps inverted Christianity?.... Just like a thorough Christian should know their adversary's text, so should a thorough Satanist.... ya know?

While I always recommend Peter Brotzmann, he really has nothing to do with crimson is asking for.

There's also Cynic, but while I like them, I've never heard much of a jazz thing in them, or any metal band for that matter. Six Litanies for Helioglabus by John Zorn is the closest I've ever heard to jazz metal, which I very strongly recommend.

To me, Cynic and Atheist are the two big jazz metal monsters. I would start with them. If you like them enough, you might think about Pestilence's "Spheres". Not quite as good but still worthwhile if you end up liking Cynic and Atheist.

The reason I listed Peter Brotzmann's Machine Gun- is that it has the manic and explosive crossover potential and likeness to metal.....and it is crazy technical and noisy. So it is relevant in my mind. But I suppose that depends on how you objectify your genre labels.... Wink
