Yeah. For those folks who can not stand death growls/harsh vocals I suggest that they listen to Tech/Extreme Metal bands that don't have the vocals. There are loads of bands out there and most of them are already listed here. Listen to what tickles your earbuds.

And now you see, Keiser, is a guy around PA that not only knows his stuff, but I and many other people around here have a great deal of respect for this guy. I respect him cos he knows what the hell is he talking about. And I 100 agree per cent with what you said Keiser.

awww thanks Hughes anyways, slaver, i think you were on the right track with mastodon. give them a shot and let it sink in and you'll find you can tolerate more and more then the the next thing you know, you're listening to meshuggah and you're first thought wont be about the vocals. Thats when you know you've made it. Vocals in extreme music are more about texture than anything. the lyrics here are hardly important, otherwise they'd make them more intelligable. Take Opeth for example (another band you should try out. more on the throaty/deep site of extreme vocals, rahter than screaming) the agressive wash of vocals and guitar compliment the soft accoustic passages, add a much more menacing air than any clean vocals would have. and since the emphasis is off the lyrics and more on texture, these sections of opeths music feel more like an instrumental, at least for me. Their songs run the gambit from soft, accoustic, heavy, loud, pure agression pure emotion, technicality, atmosphere - the diversity is the allure of their music. the song the drapery falls off of opeth's blackwater park would be a good starter for the band. i never liked the middle section much but put up with it because i liked the rest of the song so much. Im passed all that now, though i didnt have quite as negative of an opinion of them as you did to start off with. i guess all im saying is give it time, try to get used to it and focus on something other than the vocals while you listen to it.

I tried Mastodon, Remission - I really didn't like it, sorry. I find Opeth too simplistic - tried Still Life. Still trying though - I know that Shadows Fall aint really your scene but strangely I can get a bit into them. Maybe that's a bit of a start.. Also - got a band that I can handle - maybe you guys should try it - Lindisfarne album "Heading the Attack". Gonna keep trying.

Remission's probably their weakest effort try Blood Mountain- less heavy but their best work in a similar vein maybe try Gojira

seconded. dont like remission very much, blood mountain is very very good and fairly different from their earlier stuff. Opeth's blackwater park is , IMO much more enjoyable than still life. if you have a hard time with that then try ghost reveries before giving up. all three have pretty distinct differences in sound and more on the experimenal/post side but have you heard maudlin of the well? very hard band to categorize. clean and distorted vocals (singing, mellow, female/male, screaming, growling, and everything in between) heavy jazz influence, spacey textures, but still a metal band. well worth a shot. might help ease your adjustment to heavy vocals. a side note. shadows fall's lead singer is more of a shouter than an all out screamer or growler. this is akin to mastodons singer in that respect so i still think they're you best shot. blood mountain

Hey guys, I had an urge to listen to something today. I want some progressive metal with keyboards, but not in the category of what we'd call "progressive metal" at the forum. I definetely want it to be tech or extreme metal. Preferably mostly growls, but I wouldn't be really picky with it. The thing is, I'd like it to be mostly tech metal, but with some keyboards in there. Maybe sounding akin to "Train of Thought" by Dream Theater, but a lot heavier or more extreme. Any bands that you guys can think of that sound somewhat like what I'm trying to hear.
From what I've heard, a lot of Cynic's new album sounds a lot like what I'm looking for, but I guess it doesn't have keyboards. I've still gotta get that album.

Limbonic Art and Nokturnal Mortum both have some killer keyboards. Check out the albums Moon in the Scorpio and Ne-Christ. Neither sound like Cynic but I do think they sound what keyboards in metal should sound like.
If you wanna go more Power/Cheese, Sonata Arctica and Symphony X are both highly recommended.

Gojira and Mastodon.
Gojira's "The Link" DVD arrived! I've already watched it like 5 times, good stuff.

Me too. Did you see what I mean on the Terra Incognita album? They could revisit anyone of the many ideas they have on that album.. Just a very strong band in every sense.
