I'm with Iván on this one: no more protest once nothing more can be done.

That's right. I think I'm going to open an "I'm not leaving" thread.

Didn't Socrates suggest that it is better to suffer injustice than to cause injustice? Cf., the so-called Golden Rule. In any case, this entire debacle surrounding the inclusion of Metallica in the archives strikes me as somewhat puerile. Have we not sufficiently argued the case in favor of it? Perhaps the arguments aren't completely rigorous; still, there's less to be said for the lazy myopia which characterizes the counterarguments.

All's I can say is that although I'd suspect Beavis doesn't come here, for some reason, unbeknownst to him he is feeling really happy right now...

In my defense of the whole "being fair" thing, i responded by insulting
Hughes because in his response to my original post, he was being
EXTREMELY (i use caps because i dont know how to make italics, make note of that The T)
condescending, because he didnt agree with my analysis of the addition,
and me calling the ADDITION "obscenely retarded" is not the same thing
as calling the one who added it retarded, that being they, in my opinion, made a retarded decision. Hughes didnt need to treat me like a two-year-old because i just started using these forums and he's one of the "experienced members" I do believe this site is about the music, not the number of posts you have made. Im up for discussion, but I wont sit by being treated like i dont know anything because im new to these forums.

I was surprised with this inclusion when I visited the site and saw them. 3rd option, I think it is a bad inclusion. Just a metal band that I don't see as having enough requisites to be considered prog related.

Sorry, but to me that *is* the same thing ... you may not have meant to insult, but I can understand how those who are in favor of the addition would feel insulted by that statement. The question is: Why did you use an already strong and condescending word like "retarded" and then amplified it by adding "obscenely"?

It is ridiculous that i should have to be sensitive to everyone, because no matter what you say, somone wont like it. If someone is going to overreact to something like that by taking it so personally, they deserve it. Im not here to coddle to everyone's touchy feelings, and i shouldnt have to. I made my opinion clear, and emphasized how much i disagreed with the addition, the people who got all "offended" need to come back into reality and see that not everyone is going to be gentle and sensitive. I insulted no one by saying that, if they dont agree with my thesis, they should make their point, they dont have to talk down to me because they are oversensitive.

I hear what you're saying and I know how intimidating being new on a site can be, that your 'retarded' comment was directed at the decision not the people.. however you also mentioned the "arrogance of the omni wise Collaborators".. well, that's us, we're the arrogant omniwise Collaborators. We work terribly hard building up the site, doing extensive research, endless biographies and reviews.. we get nothing for this, not one thing, no money, complimentary CDs, stocks & bonds, t-shirts, nothing.. we do it out of passion for Prog.

FWIW, it has very little to do with you being a newbie. I go on many forum boards, some which are ridiculously harsh on newbies if they merely ask the wrong questions, forget to the use search function, and even slightly offend someone. I managed to always avoid finding myself in a situation where I would be disliked (to some degree or another) by more experienced forum members by making sure I got an idea of their posting style beforehand, lurking around quite a lot, and just not stirring up trouble in the first place. Trust me, the responses you got to your posts were rather light compared to what can happen to newbies at other forum boards. I don't claim to know a whole heap about prog... want the truth? I spend more time on guitar forum boards, far more time than I do on Progarchives, because I understand guitar related things much more than I do prog related topics. I'm still a "knowledge newbie" of sorts around here and probably always will be, as long as my much greater interest in guitar related things remain. The fact is, you called the collabs arrogant. And anyone here can see you've not set yourself up well for a good reputation around here, and often that first impression can have a lasting impact. There was nothing in my post that constituted flaming. In your post, in fact, in two of your posts, there was obvious flaming of members of PA. And we cannot change the fact your "analysis" was completely unsubstantiated ( a stark contrast to that of Cert's argument against your "analysis", which was more than substantiated) either. Go to the "welcome newbies" section of this forum board, or any other forum board I go on, and you'll find I'm welcoming towards newbies, and that I'm not fact, not some arrogant jerk like you might believe me to be. I don't care if you don't apologize for insulting, nor do I expect any apology, all I ask in future (and I can imagine many would agree with this), is that your posts do not have such a negative impact on a thread/forum members again. And as David said, the collabs are doing it for the love of prog and this site. I'm not a collab, but I certainly didn't get paid to write any of the reviews I did either.

Of course you don't *have* to be polite ... you have every right to be rude. But mark that line in the King Crimson song: "It doesn't mean you should ... just because you can"

Maybe you should have stopped to wonder why a senior member would respond in such a way rather than responding in kind - do two wrongs make a right?

Analysis of the addition?
I must have missed that!
"Obscenely retarted" is not analysis, BTW, it's an insult to the many people responsible for the addition, who thought it through intelligently and very carefully, via lengthy and open, public discussion threads on this forum - the decision was not made lightly or frivolously.

See above - the decision was made after a quite inordinate length of time by many people, because ther reasoning in support of the addition is incontrovertible, while the reasoning against the addition boils down to "Obscenely retarted".
I'll take strong reasoning over "bleh" any day - don't know about you.

Maybe you should take a quick look at your own actions - and think a bit before you post.
Hughes is an experienced member, and knows a huge amount about Progressive Metal, as does MikeEnRegalia and The T, who are all supporters of this addition.
I think you should let this pass, and think about why you hold the opinion you do (to which no-one can deny you're entitled), and maybe analyse the music and consider why you think it's not Progressive.
Welcome to ProgArchives, where we really enjoy intelligent music - as well as less intelligent flame wars

You are absolutely correct - this site is about the music, not the number of posts - but think of it as a small city, with thousands of people all living in it, sharing their musical passions.
No-one is going to agree with everything everyone else thinks - and that's cool, as it provokes discussions.
But people who have been here a long time make friends and gain reputations - and it is this that gives them a kind of seniority, especially if, like the people I mentioned, their contributions are thoughtful, thought-provoking and intelligent.
We don't know what you know, and you don't know what we know - as a newbie, I'd recommend lurking, voting in polls, writing reviews and getting yourself known before demanding respect - which is something you earn. Anywhere.
I look forward to reading your reviews
