Don't think it was opium Jim, although laudanum was a popular leisure drug in "his day", I think he was partial to derivatives such as morphine and cocaine.

Doyle wanted to be remembered as a serious writer of novels and a paranormal investigator - the irony is that Doyle was duped by many tricksters in his paranormal activities, scams that Holmes would have sussed out easily! n (including the "Cottingly Fairies" hoax and many theatrical seances).   Doyle finally retired Holmes as a country Bee-Keeper.

I absolutely adore the Sherlock Holmes stories.   There is a little shelf in my library devoted to all things Sherlock (canonical and otherwise) - he is one of those characters who will never die (despite Moriarty, Conan Doyle and the passage of time!).

Indeed, Jeremy Brett was excellent, although he did take his portrayal a little over-the-top by the end (but I suppose that was because of his personal difficulties, as alluded to in previous posts).

My favourite Holmes is Robert Stephens in 'The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes' - a wonderful film.   He brings out the weary sarcasm of the character so wonderfully.
