It's amazing how many memorable and genuinely commercial tunes there are on the Commercial Album. In a sane universe it would have sold more copies than Thriller.

I don't have any Residents albums but I notice The Commercial Album is available in remastered version or something (25th Anniversity Edition is it?), so I may grab it in my next Wayside order.
Frith's on that one, isn't he? |

Speaking of the commercial album, have you guys seen the music videos they made for a couple of songs on there? They're great, especially Moisture.

Get "Meet the Residents", "Duck Stab/Buster and Glen", "Third Reich n' Roll", "Not Available", or "Eskimo" first. They're better albums. ![]() |

How's that Magma EP? I have a few extra tracks on eMusic. I have MDK and KA, but I honestly haven't listened to them enough to get a firm opinion. Too much music and not enough time/attention for it all. Ruckus makes everything so much more difficult sometimes. ;-)

It's an extremely good live rendition of MDK and Theusz Hamtaahk, which is stunning. If you'd rather have something completely different, however, go with Live/Hhai, Kohntarkosz, or Udu Wudu. Edited by MovingPictures07 - September 16 2008 at 22:27 |

The studio version? This live performance is quite a bit different. In any case, the version of Theusz Hamtaahk is essential. |

Yeah, but I hate buying live albums. Even if they are significantly different, they usually aren't vastly different, and then I can't decide which one to listen to, and I just bought the same material twice. Although with eMusic that cost is negligable in this case.

In this case, the live MDK is *significantly* different - some would say better - than the studio version: it's a crystal clear recording, an amazing performance, and a very... what's the phrase... sensitive interpretation. An easier listen in many ways - and possibly, depending on your tastes, a better first exposure to this band - than the studio MDK. Theusz Hamtaahk is only available in live format, and this is widely championed as being the best one. If I could only choose one album to hear for the rest of my life... let's face it, I'd have a big problem. ![]() Here endeth the lesson. ![]() |

An awful lot of people are there in disguise on the Commercial Album! ![]() MP07 may be right - first Residents is as crucial as (sorry) first Magma. It can put you off for life or become a lasting source of horrified fascination. Choose wisely!! And... er... don't expect to like it much the first few times you hear their stuff (unless it just happens to appeal instantly - which I'm sure it does to some people). (That's assuming you've not heard any of it yet... perhaps you have... anyway... er...) The only album I have ever taken back to the shop because I didn't like it was 'Wormwood'. (I still don't own the studio version of that, but the live is excellent!!) There was something too weird and yet too... I dunno... anodyne...? about it, somehow. Not the best starting point for me. But I was too interested in the idea of them not to try something else. And the moment I heard 'Meet the Residents' (some months later, after much reflection!) - well, that one I liked immediately. That one is more 'vintage weirdness' - a more comfortable kind of oddness I guess! Anyway... have yerself some very strange fun there. You might like it... ![]() |

Henry, definitely get Retrospektiw I-II.
Patrick and Melissa are right, it's essential. It was actually my starting point with Magma. In some ways though it actually makes studio Magma harder to get into because it really is THAT good. Hmm, well I'm a Frith fan and Wayside are getting in The Commercial Album, so I may as well start somewhere. ![]() |

Well, if you only make one exception to this rule, make it Magma. |

I can't give a definitive answer. Trigaux has had mobility problems for some years, but I don't know if he has ever been wheelchair bound. And yes, the one in the wheelchair looks more like Berckmans to me. maybe somebody can ask him at next year's RIO festival.
