Henry, if you like Angherr Shisspa you also might want to grab some Ruins from emusic. Try Tzomborgha.

D'you think I'd like that? Good place to start, Ruins-wise? I adore Koenji's 'Angherr Shisspa', but I'm a bit intimidated by Ruins... ![]() |

If you already love Koenjihyakkei there's probably no need to be intimidated by Ruins. Also it's the only Ruins album I have so I couldn't recommend a better starting point. ![]() |

Tzomborgha is a good place to start, but Vrressto or Pallaschtom are also excellent. Some of their earlier albums are a bit more rough around the edges - Refusal Fossil is a selection of out takes that is probably best left until after you've negotiated some of the better produced albums.
Once you get into Yoshida Tatsuya there's a lot to explore - Korekyojinn and Daimonji being but two other excellent bands.

The better option would be to get the other 3 Koenji albums. ![]() Ruins is great too, however. |

I must give that another spin sometime soon - excellent album! Apparently there are plans for a follow up, although obviouslyas a trio this time.

^Isn't Hugh Hopper laid up right now?
I second the previous recommendations of Ruins and in particular Daimonji. |

Impossible, as "la" only precedes singular nouns. I dunno what Faulx means though. |

Apparently it's old French for the scythe (as in the grim reaper I suppose). Daniel Denis mentions it in an interview here.

Haha, it would be! ![]() Thanks everyone for the Ruins/Yoshida-related suggestions. I really must get more Koenjihyakkei... Listening to the Ruins snippets on emusic, I wasn't as daunted as I had been previously. Maybe my ear has been sufficiently educated! ![]() ![]() |

Yes, those rapacious scallywags from Univers Zero will crack you up every time
![]() UZ bassoonist Michel Berckmans actually is an actor and comedian when he's not playing music. I can only imagine his stand up routine - 'The four horsemen of the apocalypse go into a bar...' .

A silly question I know but one I have yet to find out an answer too...
But who is the musician in the wheelchair on the cover of Héresie? I believe it is Berckmans (by looking at later photos of him on the UZ website) but he is not in a wheelchair in those. Was he laid up or was it just for photographic purposes? Also, I recommend Korekyokinn. I have heard all of their albums. I need to play them again though as they are a little indistinguishable the first time around... with further listens I am sure they will sink in. As for Ruins, I only have the one album Hyderomastgroningem. I am familiar with their track Guamallpish though. The vocals strangely remind me of Serj Tankian from System of a Down. In a good way though, obviously! |

I've had Ewaz Vader for ages... as well as Vendredi 13... grrr, I must give them a spin! I have the debut as well, I just need Dark Shot now. Oh and I have all but one Soleil Zeuhl release on CD. I had a mad moment and decided to try and buy them all (except those two that aren't Zeuhl). The only one I'm missing is Archaia I think. It's oop. ![]() Oh and Melissa, if you only have Angherr Shisspa, which I think you do... then check out Skin Graft Records website for some full length tracks from Koenjihyakkei and Ruins. Let me find the link... Ah yes, they have: Koenjihyakkei Doi Doi (from Hundred Sights of Koenji) Koenjihyakkei Grembo Zavia (from Viva Koenji!) Koenjihyakkei Rattims Friezz (from Angherr Shisspa) -- but you have this already Ruins Hard Rock Medley and Guamallpish (from Pallaschtom) Ruins Warrido (from Vrresto) Ruins Praha in Spring and Outburn (from 1986-1992) Ruins Refusal Fossil (from Refusal Fossil) Plus lots of The Flying Luttenbachers tracks. I don't think their version of De Futura is there though. http://www.skingraftrecords.com/audio.html ![]() Edited by James - September 16 2008 at 07:01 |

I've just put on Ewaz Vader as well.
![]() You know I said I was hoping to get Dun's Eros on CD 'cause it was oop? Well I've just found I have it on CD already. ![]() I forget if I got it from Soleil Zeuhl/Wayside or an Amazon Vendor but I do have it on CD. I totally forgot I had though, oops! |

As predicted, I'm really liking this...
![]() This has a lovely, treacly, sumptuous feel to it. I am wreathed in lovely elegant bass/drums/guitar/Fender Rhodes gorgeousness! ![]() (Thanks for the PM by the way James, will reply later...) |

I'm also enjoying it. No skips for me though! I thought of a good word to describe this earlier... now what was it? Oh yes, it's a melange of jazzy goodness, except it's more than just jazz. The slower pieces are lovely and one track reminded me of Univers Zéro every so slightly with its dark undertones. Or is that overtones? I'm never sure. Yes, there is lots of wonderful playing going on here too. Terrific bass from Bussonnet and of course, not only do you get wonderful solos from Mac Gaw but some nice rhythmic playing too. Plus Borghi's keyboard playing is luscious. ![]() I wonder how Vendredi 13 compares? As well as the debut, of course. |

Just finished listening to that myself. Absolutely gets better with every listen, the last "proper" track from the original LP, "Novarest", is stunning, definitely my favorite from the album. |
