I like it quite a bit, actually. ![]() Not as much as Eskimo or others, but still it's worth hearing IMO. |

Er, hello.
Time for some shameless self promotion. ![]() I just put an entry on my blog which you might enjoy reading. I absolutely love trying to describe music, and this is my attempt at pinning down Univers Zero... |

I really enjoyed that, nice piece there Melissa. "If you really want to cause your neighbour’s milk to turn sour, and his pig to go a funny colour and keel over, then Univers Zero is just the thing for you! " ![]() |

Univers Zéro is just a more advanced form of classical music to me, so I think those who are acquainted with the dark overtones of someone like Shostakovich or Bartók, should find Univers Zéro's earlier albums quite easy to listen to, even if they don't necessarily like them.
The same applies for Present and Art Zoyd as well. Still, it's uncomfortable for newcomers, nevertheless. |

Thanks Pat! ![]() I am happy to report that it appeared to spark some interest in UZ from a music-aficionado acquaintance of mine. (Given that he likes Guapo, Sunn O))) and various other dark-toned things, I would have thought UZ would be right up his street. We'll see... ![]()
Hahaha, be you callin' me the 'n' word, James?! ![]() I don't think Univers Zero have any intention of being easy to listen to; that is their main selling point really!! (Obviously, as you say, anyone who has 'got their ear in' with 20th century classical music will have a head start in enjoying it, or at least 'getting' it, but still...) Or rather, to put it more clearly, even if you have no trouble discerning the structure or tracing the chamber music influences - even if you are not put off in the slightest by the technical/compositional intricacies of it - there is little likelihood that you would smile and tap your foot. 'Enjoyably creepy' is the idea, no? ![]() ![]() |

Some years ago a friend of mine became convinced that UZ was a goth band, based on the Heresie cover photo. Hearing the music didn't alter his opinion either - he reckoned it was the perfect music for listening to while reading HP Lovecraft, which was pretty much on the money given the Lovecraft references scattered UZ and Daniel Denis' albums.

Talented band with roots in UZ and Present camp, while being more rock-oriented.
I'll be getting a promo of their new album soon which is to come out on RAIG.
Their s/t is definitely recommended.

On the Cuneiform website it describes them as 'both gothic and futuristic'! ![]() I think it goes very well with Edward Gorey, myself. |

They also remind me of the Crimson King at points in their music. Also, one friend of mine, said their debut would make a great soundtrack to a horror movie.
I'll agree with ave here. Recommended.

Ordered some One Shot, UZ - Ceux de Dehors, and Guapo Five Suns yesterday from Laser's Edge, and they arrived today. Now that is awesome.

Ceux du Dehors is UZ's best if you ask me!

One Shot - Ewaz Vader absolutely blew me away from first listen, it is one of the best CDs I've heard this year. I can't recommend it highly enough, if you don't have it. Only got through half of Ceux de Dehors last night but already I vastly prefer it to 1313, the only other UZ I've heard to date. Already I can tell it's a masterpiece, look forward to hearing the rest. Heresie is also ordered and on its way, so I'll give you my take on that when I have it as well. |

Cool, thanks for this. I've become more and more impressed with Bussonnet of late, so One Shot will be a definite future avenue of investigation. ![]() ![]() Did you like Five Suns? |

I did - better than Elixirs, not as good as Black Oni. |

Also, I believe the One Shot drummer Daniel Jeand'heur also plays on Thollot's Contact with Bussonnet (someone can correct me if I'm wrong). |

Black Oni (can't quite bring myself to call it 'BO'...) is still my favourite too. Hmm, might have to throw that on next... hardcore listenin' in progress here today!!
You are not wrong - and he's really good on 'Contact'. (Well, they both are!) On that album he (Jeand'heur) reminds me a bit of Vander here and there... (Oh dear, look what happened. I was doing very well on the 'don't buy CDs' front but now I've been and gone and ordered a bunch of stuff... including 'Ceux du Dehors' and 'Ewaz Vader'. ![]() ![]() |

Hehe, yes. I actually need more shelves now. ![]() ![]() James should be pleased, I ordered Kultivator, 'Bardomens Stigar' also... ![]() (Plus F. Thollot on his lonesome, 'Ceux D'en Face' ('Ceux' seems to be a popular word...) and - offtopicklye - Arti e Mestieri, 'Giro di Valzer Domani'. I loved 'Tilt', so why the hell not. ![]() |
