I love the Residents, but Third Reich and Roll never really clicked with me.

It was Chris Cutler who was responsible for their music reaching the UK, and both he and Fred Frith have guested on assorted Residents albums, plus they're about as experimental as music gets - I think that makes them about as RIO as anybody else. 3rd Reich is a masterpiece of twisted beauty, and paved the way for Laibach's totalitarian vision of popular culture a decade or so later. Recently I've been playing Fingerprince a lot, but pretty much everything from the first decade is essential listening.

I think it might be my favourite of theirs. Although it really is quite a horrible noise, and I'd be very embarrassed to be caught holding it (all those swastikas... ouch), it just has a certain something! Oh, wait a mo, maybe the Commercial Album is my favourite overall! ![]() |

Does anyone here like Renaldo and the Loaf, I wonder? (Not sure what category you'd put them in, but still...)

I think the Commercial Album is my favorite as well, but Mark of the Mole is damn close.

I haven't listened to them for years. I recently heard their collaboarative album with The Residents and wasn't that impressed, but I might give them another go in the near future if I can find any of their albums.

I don't really like 'Title in Limbo' (that Rez collab.) either, but I'm rather fond of 'Songs for Swinging Larvae'. Their stuff is hard to come by - I'd love more but you either have to pay large dollars or do Naughty Things. ![]() (The ones I have are only copies anyway, but I got them from 'Renaldo' himself! ![]() ![]() |

thought i would ask here. Anyone heard Otomo Yoshihide's new disc Core Anode?
The disc is a live recording of a concert played in the UK. There were two pieces played at the concert, an incredibly quite one and one where the musicians played as loud as possible. The track which has made it to disc is the loud version. Considering the line-up of musicians - who usually specialise in quite subtle improvisational environments - sounds like the recorded version would have been a tone of fun to play/watch. I have heard mixed views on the success of the disc, most of the people I know who dislike the disc usually don't go for the whole noise and rock spectrum of music, so it isn't a rounded view. |

Found this on mindawn (hope they don't mind me reposting the summary): Francois Ribac Le Regard de Lyncee
A
great French musicologist, François RIBAC is also an appreciated
composer in today's scene. After "Musiques Pour La Scène" (1989), "La
Nef Du Roi Moselle" is a kind of never-heard cross-over opera, created
to accompany Didier DOUMERGUE's show. Due to his great musical
knowledge, he blends Progressive rock (Jean-Pascal BOFFO), medieval
music, classical opera choirs, new musics influences (ART ZOYD, UNIVERS
ZERO...) and German classical music (BRECHT, WEILL...). A true new and
fascinating blending ! Female singer Eva SCHWABE is guesting on the
album, as for the Rodemack Choir (This is a preserved medieval village
sit along the Moselle river in France)."Le Regard De Lyncée" (2000) is
his newest opus, sounding pretty much like a contemporary opera. |
