I also can't figure out how you can play cello and drum with your feet at the same time.

Wikipedia has this explaqnation:
"Frith played guitar, violin, keyboards, bass drum and hi-hat while Cora played cello, bass guitar, homemade drums and other contraptions enabling him to play instruments with his feet."
Frith's set up is not that uncommon; John Fiddler did much the same when Medicine Head performed as a duo, and I've seen a few buskers do the same thing.
Cora's set up is more intriguing. Sadly I never saw them live, but maybe somebody else can supply a few more details.

Listening to Guapo's Elixirs here, Jeweled Turtle, at least, has a bit of a Universe Zero feel to it.

^ A good choice, In Extremis is perhaps their most solid release. If you like that one you should get A History of Madness as well, although it's a bit harder to get into. And considering you have In This Life, you could check out their Early Plague Years compilation featuring their two first albums on one CD. Perhaps not their best material, but very good nevertheless.

Lately I've been particularly partial to Time of Orchids... Namesake Caution is still among the best recent RIO albums I've heard, maybe even a classic RIO album in general. Too bad they broke up it is I guess... but I'm not sure how they could have surpassed that album in terms of quality anyways, so maybe it's good they ended on such a great note.
Also, after looking around a bit, I found a band that I will in the future be investigating more thoroughly:
Very psychedelic.

Wrote a review for it here in PE (and it also appears in the band's website and in PE).
A very good album, very worth my time, dark, intense, heavy (atmosphere wise), dramatic...
Unlike their previous works, it is more song-oriented and there is a sort of connecting thread in theme and sound between all songs.

I've just been listening to Blast - Altrastrata, parts of which could be out takes from Unrest (no bassoon, but some very nice sax). You might also want to try U-Totem, who use a variety of reed instruments and have the classic RIO sound.

Well if you want to go along the lines of Henry Cow check out Lindsay Cooper's (bassoon/oboe player) solo albums. I listen to both Rags and Music for Other Occasions more than my Henry Cow vinyls. Another must is 'Neo Museum', the best Henry Cow soundalike I've heard.

TH's band The Work...thoughts?
Wayside makes it seem like greatness stacked on top of awesomeness inside of wowzawoo. It indeed sounds interesting and something I should like but I've never heard of them before so I thought I'd inquire to the experts.

Hey Adam, Dahlia has been acquainted with NEO Museum already, I believe. She's aware of Cooper's work with the Cow but not sure if she's got her solo material. I guess I should let her speak for herself here though. |
