Hi people. Not much of a progger myself (yet:?) but always on he lookout for interesting, beautiful, mesmerising, stirring new sounds. I'e been lurking around the site for some time now.
My interests are folk-slanted.. I also like beautiful, clear, soulful vocals. These folkish interests hae taken me on a journey from "celtic", regional and new-age slanted popular music (such as clannad, chieftains and loreena mckennitt) to explore first Jethro Tull's folkish Songs from the woods and later on I've grown to appreciate the complexity of As thick as brick and A passion play (and these three remain my preferred albums from this group, even though I also like some of Ian' s newer solo attempts). Actually am acuaintance of mine first introduced me to Tull and later recommended Camel. I was thus introduced to Camel's Harour of tears. Rajaz, Mirage and Snow Goose and I instantly knew I would love them. Harbour of tears in particular seems to me a very wholesome listetning experience, with all kinds of emotions rushing through like the waves of the ocean. Afterwards i began researching. I've known, of course, some pinkfloyd- it accompanied my transition from childhood to adulthood. My favourte track will forever remain Echoes, it tends to take me to distant realms of thoughts or dreaming. I am familiar with Mostly Autumn (I like them) Gentle Giant, Gryphon, ELP, King Crimson (I like in the court of crimson king), Genesis (Truth be told I love one track in particular, The fountain of Salmacis. The opening crescendo-decrescendo never fails to sweep me off my feet. It is a memorable song). I tried some italian prog mostly listened to some pastoral-sounding symphonic-classified tracks, which were kind of nice. I tried Franco Battiato. He sometimes gets to me, sometimes not, depends on my mood at a given moment. He can be somewhat disturbing but he is interesting. And certainly not the easiest one. I also liked Karnataka's "Storm". And Renaissance is amongst my favourites too. I have hear about Shine Dión and listened to one track from Wyn, it seemed kind of nice. I am of course familiar with Yes, Wihbone Ash, Porcupine tree and Marillion and while Wishbone Ash I do reach for from time to time, I have not tried the other two yet. I hear enthusiasm whenever dream theater or tangerine dream are mentioned but i'm not at all sure whether these would appeal to me. Seeing that I'm interested in Japan, I would be very much obliged for some pointers as to good japanese progrock, possibly progfolk. So far I have only listened to Vermilion Sands' Blue Water (which is nice). From japanese musicians I only happen to know those who are not classified as prog, such as kitaro or himekami What else..there are probably still a few things that I could mention but I fear I've gone and overdone it with this post. I hope I have not, at least, presented myself as a godforsaken bore. To my surprise, this is quite a lot of things that I had to say, although it was not my original intention. With regards to all of you prog fans and experts out here and thank for reading whoever managed to get to the end... :-D MC. Edited by MostlyCamel - August 16 2008 at 13:23 |

I share your fascination with Japan (it's also the Japanese women for me). The time I spent working there was the best time of my life, and I try to go back every few years. I'd love to make Kyoto my home. Japan has one of the most amazing progressive scenes, I think -- especially if one is into Avant Prog and Zeuhl, but I'd love to hear more Japanese progressive folk. And since you mentioned Kitaro, I used to listen to Kitaro, especially the Silk Road albums, incessantly. Probably too avant for your tastes, but I'd recommend Zypressen. Those into classic Prog might do well with Ain Soph, and Bi Kyo Ran, and Kenso. The Ruins family and other zeuhl projects (love Bondage Fruit and Koenjihyakkei), and Ground Zero can probaly wait for you. It has an amazing psyche scene too. Check out Far East Family Band. Boredoms is one I love, but probably wouldn't be your cup of tea.
Lacrymosa is amazing, and one to discover later. As is Tipographica and Le Silo. For those who enjoy pop mixed with psych and alternative, one I enjoy is ZETTAIMU Check out the myspace page, it's accessible, but good. http://www.myspace.com/garandorecords The Japanese scene is just outstanding these days. And I commonly like wackiness in my music, and Japan delivers in the wacky department in spades. |
